The MMO genre has evolved dramatically over the past decade. Many developers have learned that there isn't much room for subscription-based games, while others have found out the hard way that successful post-launch content is necessary to retain players.

With the announcement that Final Fantasy XIV is the second most popular subscription-based MMO on the market, I thought it'd be interesting to look at what games currently reign supreme in the space. Reducing the list down to the top 10 most popular games I found that the most popular MMOs all have distinct themes and gameplay styles.
