In skilled hands, adventure games can deliver a wide range of content, from horror to fantasy to humor. Because humor and wit so often rely on verbal set-ups and punchlines, text-heavy adventure games offer an appealing laugh delivery system. The player has to read, after all, and may take the time to appreciate a well-written joke, satire, or insightful comment. Unfortunately, though, humor is subjective and mercilessly difficult to pull off well. Get it wrong and a game can lurch from promising to painful."
