GT: Coming off the recent Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth genre mashup, the Etrian Odyssey series is again venturing outside its first-person dungeon-crawling roots with Etrian Mystery Dungeon, which takes the Etrian world and slaps it onto the ancient rogue-like RPG game structure. While Persona Q transported the Persona series into the Etrian gameplay model, the Etrian world, this time, is the star, and the result is a game that, for the right audience, could contain a lifetime's worth of fun. For a lot of others, though, it proves to be an archaic RPG experience that touts the genre's early tropes as selling points, not the obstacles to fun that they sometimes end up being. Rogue-like fans, Etrian fans and Mystery Dungeon fans are the big winners here, but more casual RPG fans may also see this extremely deep old school RPG as more than the sum of its aging parts.
