Jim sterling: God of War, as a series, epitomizes everything about big-budget game design both the good and the bad. Its beautiful, slickly designed, empowering, and carries itself with a magnetic energy. Its also downright sadistic, mean spirited, and patently ridiculous. Its masculinity is adorned in rippling muscles, unyielding angst, and a rage that speaks to the players own quiet yet intense desperation. Having said that, it may surprise you to know Im actually a fan of the series the fact it is, at once, the best and worst of the videogame industry is something I strangely admire about the whole thing.
