Does the Apocalypse Have to be so Doom and Gloom?

The post-apocalyptic setting seems to be a fan favourite place to send gamers over the past few years; classics such as the Fallout series, The Last of Us, Rage and the Metro games are but to name a few of the titles that have transported us to a barren wastelands that, for the most part, its probably best arent actually real life locations. But with all the doom and gloom surrounding these fictional wastelands and the small glimmers of hope that occasionally pop up in a plot line where humanity is all but non-existent, or an even more maniacal and mistrusting representation of what it once was, is there really such a need for absolutely EVERYTHING to be so run down and dingy?
