Until Isolation oozed through our letterbox, we had to confess: we didn't find the alien scary. Not one bit. It would have felt like being scared of Mickey Mouse or something. The original film was a horror classic, but the following 35 years of rampant commercialism all but declawed HR Giger's most infamous creation. Nowadays, you can stuff your shopping basket with everything from cuddly Xenomorph plushies to Pez alien heads that impregnate your stomach with tiny bricks of compressed sugar. Overexposed and overfamiliar, the creature had no business instilling fear in anything but our wallets in 2014.
