Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Review | GamesBeat

GamesBeat: Im blown away by how well thought out the base design in Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is. The designers stuck with a traditional, no-thrills, rock/paper/scissor foundation that provides for depth and complexity to evolve on the players part. Then they managed to create a comeback mechanic that I can tolerate while creatively finding a way to keep the mind-game momentum rolling through the combo system.

Richard Simpson: "It would be easy to dismiss Dead or Alive 5: Last Round based on some of the more questionable content, but what you cannot dismiss is the fact that this is one of the more accessible and solid arena fighting games available and this definitive entry to the series cements that reputation."

Ken McKown writes: There are a lot of games getting second chances on this new round of consoles. Whether that is due to the fact that they are easy ports which tend to turn a profit, or that these systems launched a year too early and platform holders need more games is anyones guess. The latest title to see the HD treatment is Dead or Alive 5. The titular fighter from Team Ninja has returned with blistering fast game play, two new characters, and of course a host of scandalous outfits.

MNJ:
Strangely enough, there havent been many beat em ups on current-gen consoles up until now. Neither Namco nor Capcom have yet made their move, so Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja decided to current gennify (shut up, its a word now) their Dead or Alive 5 and let people beat each other up in 1080p with 60 frames per second, jiggle physics included. Quite literally. Of the three big franchises of this genre, Dead or Alive has always been the most casual one. Instead of focusing on ridiculously long combo attacks or technical knowledge of gameplay mechanics, Dead or Alive wants its players to have fun first and foremost. Granted, this doesnt mean that theres no depth to Last Round, just that its much easier to get into, and therefore perfect as a couch multiplayer game.
