NLife:
"We're in the middle of one of the most diverse, intriguing periods in video game history. The rise of download games, small 'indie' developers and stores like the Wii U eShop have shifted how we think about content; we're a long way from the retail-only culture of the '90s or even early 2000s. One modern trend is for low-fi experiences that are simple aesthetically and in concept, yet in the case of the eShop can also often be mediocre-to-poor efforts from those aiming for a quick buck while learning on the job. Thomas Was Alone, first released over two years ago, is the product of Mike Bithell's efforts to develop his skills, utilise hard-earned contacts and to deliver a clear vision for a game. It's a definitive example of how to take a simple approach and deliver a wonderful experience, and an example to those still taking early steps in the world of development."

Hayden Waugh writes: "If you peel back the layers, Never Alone is a simple platforming game that provides a good tale with unique cultural ties. But despite all its faults, there is an important point here: Upper One Games have successfully delivered what few developers have before, in bringing an isolated culture to consoles."

Marcus Estrada writes: "As far as Im aware, Upper One Games are the only developer who have pushed so strongly to bring a culture and their input into a video game release to such a massive degree. In all, there were nearly 40 individuals who offered their stories, history, and discussion to help turn Never Alone into a game which its community could be proud of. Why have other developers avoided trying something similar? In many ways, it probably feels risky - but so far the response to this game has been immensely positive."

Josh of RGN writes, "Never Alone comes from development studio Upper One Games which started back in 2012 and is known for being the first indigenous owned company in the United States. They have teamed up with E-Line Media to publish Never Alone. Never Alone is the first game of its own kind in the aspect that it combines the culture of the native people of Alaska known as the Inupiat with action and adventure to create a truly great gameplay experience."
