Review: Towerfall Ascension [Broken Cartridge]

Added: 08.03.2014 15:15 | 15 views | 0 comments

Broken Cartridge: "It has been about a year since Towerfall was released on the Ouya, immediately becoming one of the few must buy titles on the console. Towerfall is an amazing fighting/platforming game where your character uses their arching skills to take out the enemy. While it was on the Ouya it only had a local multiplayer game mode, but the new release for Playstation 4 and PC expands the horizon for the game entirely."

TowerFall Ascension Review: PS4's Must-Have Party Game I Gimme Gimme Games

GGG writes in their review of TowerFall Ascension: "TowerFall was pretty much the biggest reason to own an Ouya last year. Matt Thorson, head of developer Matt Makes Games, has a great way of selling hardware as TowerFall Ascension will make you buy second, third or fourth PS4 controllers. That may sound crazy, to say a simple indie game like TowerFall can influence a person to spend $60-$180 on additional hardware but its undeniable from the moment you boot it up that you need to experience this with as many friends as possible."

Excerpt: "Unpredictable moments can make the basic firing of an arrow more exciting when it is fired towards a lantern, which can ignite it to become a flaming arrow to set your opponent ablaze upon death. Firing arrows simultaneously causes them to cancel each other out. Everything is out to kill you, from your friends, to the power-ups, and even the levels themselves where platforms disappear or smash violently into nearby walls. The final kill allows you to relive your glory or utter failure thanks to the instant replay, which can be used ad infinitum and even slowed down to pour salt onto the freshly opened wound."

There’s something so satisfying about catching your opponent’s arrow mid-flight and shooting it right back in his or her face--especially if you don't already have an arrow waiting in your quiver. It’s a complete reversal of fortune: the hunted becomes the hunter in a micro-drama that lasts less than a second. Then the next round starts and it all begins anew. Towerfall Ascension is full of these tiny victories, and joins a growing collection of competitive games--including

Towerfall Ascension's stages have great variety in their layouts and the sorts of traps and other hazards they offer.

Whether you’re playing with or without variants, Towerfall is a blast to play with your friends. Scoring a kill takes work since the arrows don’t move much faster than the characters, and can be snatched out of the air by alert players. Instead of fighting head-on, you are constantly thinking of new ways to outsmart the other players--either by tricking them with some new tactic or catching them with a surprise attack. You need a plan of attack, and when that plan comes together it feels very rewarding.

If you don’t have any friends on hand, Towerfall’s appeal drops significantly. Quest mode is a fun distraction, but pales against the fierce competition of Versus, which requires at least two local players to use. Online play is completely absent as well, which further compounds this issue. With a few friends, Towerfall Ascension is a fantastic multiplayer game that offers a ton of variations on its enjoyable archery combat. Just make sure those friends can join you on the couch.
