STFUandPLAY's Tony Polanco writes: "The God Of War franchise, once one of the strongest in the gaming world has finally stumbled. While God Of War: Ascension is technically a good game, it falls well below the standards set by previous entries in the series."

The God of War series made a mark on the gaming landscape by employing over-the-top brutality, colossally epic battles, and of course, an extremely violent protagonist. It's difficult to imagine any other franchise capturing the essence of one mans ruthlessness amidst the grand clash between men and gods. Now the Spartan warrior Kratos has returned for another round, and this time his rage is aimed at the keepers of oaths: the Furies.

In March 2005 Santa Monica studios set out to tell the incredible tale of Kratos, a brutal and merciless Spartan warrior forged and shaped in bloodlust and ambition. It was Kratoss struggle with the Gods of Olympus and the demons of his past that paved the way for an incredibly engaging and exciting franchise. With every installment the formula has been meticulously innovated and improved, bringing it to the precipice of setting who many believe to be one of the highest benchmarks for quality in modern gaming. There are numerous words that come to gamers minds when they anticipate a new God of War title, brutality, scale, presentation and did I mention brutality?....

What Sony Santa Monica have created is another epic entry into the franchise that we have all come to expect from this legendary studio but, they have missed the mark big time when it comes to what could have made Ascension stand out from the pack: The Story. The graphics and scale of the game are incredible and the inclusion of multiplayer for the first time in the series was a good choice. It is unfortunate though that the whole idea of the game was practically non existent throughout my 8 or so hours of the campaign.

UK chart: God of War: Ascension launch sales half that of GOW 3

Added: 18.03.2013 13:19 | 4 views | 0 comments

PlayStation 3-exclusive God of War: Ascension has entered the UK all-formats chart in second place. It sold less than half the launch week sales of predecessor God of War 3. Square Enix's Tomb Raider reboot maintained its hold on the top spot for another week, meanwhile. They're probably having a Lara Lara laughs.

Ken McKown writes: Kratos is not a good man. In fact Kratos is a very, very, VERY bad man. It is hard to believe that even after six games, the entire tale of the Ghost of Sparta hasnt been told. Sony has plenty of great franchises, but few spark the excitement that the God of War series does, or at least did. Kratos latest adventure is just as much a proper entry in the series as any that came before it, and the multiplayer actually isnt as terrible as I expected.

News: UK Video Game Chart: Tomb Raider holds on to beat God of War

Added: 18.03.2013 10:05 | 8 views | 0 comments

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm new at No.3.

Lara's reboot dropped 72 per cent over its blockbuter first week, but sales remained strong enough to prevent God of War: Ascension from taking the top spot. The action prequel recorded the second biggest opening of all five God of War titles, but sold under half the first week total of God of War 3 three years ago.

Activision Blizzard's StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm claims third place, but is likely to have seen its retail sales hampered by the popularity of buying digitally.

Next up is City Interactive's Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 at No.4, bettering the chart...
