Difficult games tread a fine line between frustrating and fun, but titles that pull off this balance are often true classics. NIS America has a new challenge in store for gamers with The Awakened Fate Ultimatum, a rogue-like RPG that is harder than most. Should you rise up to this role-playing gauntlet?

Jae Lee writes: I was taken by surprise when I played The Guided Fate Paradox, the predecessor to this title.
It had a rather unique premise, as an ordinary young man was forced to play the role of God to defeat the devils and save the angels from extinction.
It featured a deep rogue-like system where death was severely punished, and the randomized dungeons were filled with great mystery and bounty.
In fact, I enjoyed the title so much that I scored it an 8.5, awarding it an editors choice award.
So, naturally when I heard there was a sequel in the works, I looked forward to it with great expectations.
However, now that Ive played it, Im sad to report that it doesnt do the original justice.

A little more simple than the usual Nippon Ichi fare, but still an accessible and fun adventure that does justice to its pedigree.

Push Square: "You'll know with a single glance whether you're interested at all in playing The Awakened Fate Ultimatum. It's a niche hardcore RPG with an undoubtedly Japanese style of storytelling, falling victim to almost every cliché in the book throughout its duration but doing so unashamedly. If that's not really your thing, then avoid it at all costs. Otherwise, it's a carefully made dungeon crawling roguelike, offering a real challenge and a (mostly) likeable cast packed with fun interactions. The elements borrowed from other titles only act to improve the experience as a whole, focusing on simplicity with a ton of potential for elation and breakdown alike. It's a great time sink once those initial slow hours are out of the way. If all of this sounds exciting, you may just be fated to be together."
