BioShock Infinite takes the unorthodox step of being entirely unconnected with its predecessors, and is instantly better for it. A fresh experience from the off, it tells the tale of ex-Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, knee-deep in debt and forced to travel to the floating city-state of Columbia to collect an unknown girl. By immediately giving you a shady objective, Irrational set Booker as a man who will save his own arse despite any moral obligations, and that makes him instantly teresting than your average hero. Columbia is a well-known independent state ran by the apparently prophetic Father Zachary Comstock, with a troubled past involving the Boxer Rebellions and an emancipation from the United States. Dumped at a lighthouse that will be familiar to BioShock veterans (although Ken Levine assures us its not that lighthouse), Booker quickly enters Columbia and this is where the story really kicks off.

BioShock is an absolutely beautiful franchise, and Infinite's trip to Columbia does not disappoint by any means.

411mania - This is the game against which all other 2013 Game of the Year candidates will be judged, and it will take something incredibly special to knock BioShock Infinite off its throne. Everything about BioShock, from the incredible world of Columbia to the engrossing story to the memorable characters to the polished combat system is superb. It will draw you in, mess with your perceptions, and leave you feeling like youve just experienced something very, very important. When I offered to write this review, I asked if it could be just four words long. The editors said no, but I will still include them here, because my entire point can be boiled down to this simple sentence: Buy this game now.

Michael Engle: Bioshock Infinite is one of the defining games of this generation. Not only does it surpass all other Irrational Games' titles to date, it stands alone as an achievement in storytelling, engaging environments, and, above all else, fun gameplay. In a world where Skylines, Vigor, and heavy artillery are your best friends, Columbia is a living, breathing, utopian roller coaster ride that will leave your jaw on the floor for fifteen hours. From its opening moments to its mind-bending conclusion, after you get blasted over the rainbow, you will never want to go back. We're not in Rapture anymore.
