Last year, Nintendo of America reportedly attempted to take advantage of the increasingly popular world of Lets Play videos by inserting advertisements and commercials into user-made videos containing Nintendo brand images or audio of a certain length. Furthermore, Nintendo created a new affiliate program this past May that shared ad revenue with prominent YouTubers who post popular videos containing the companys copyrighted content. During an event for Nicovideo, Nintendo was revealed to be a sponsor. At said event, a video featuring Satoru Iwata was shown, in which he announced that Nintendo is now officially giving its permission for anyone to use their games and properties for derivative works (such as Lets Play videos, music covers, fan art, et cetera) which is a distinct turnaround from the companys previous stance on the matter.
