Until Dawn combines the best of horror films and games on PS4 | The Verge

Added: 25.08.2015 11:18 | 6 views | 0 comments

Verge: The best horror movie of the year might just be a video game. Though its available on the PlayStation 4, and you play it with a controller, Until Dawn is really as much a film as it is a game; borrowing from some of the biggest horror franchises around, like Saw to Evil Dead, it combines the tropes into a terrifying experience thats both familiar and unique. But its that added layer of interactivity the fact that you actually have some measure of control over the events that makes Until Dawn something special. Its a horror movie where you can actually tell those stupid teens what to do, in hopes that theyll actually survive the night.

An Open Love Letter to Dark Souls

Graham at GameSpew writes: "I was first introduced to the Dark Souls series by an old housemate who swore by the game. He explained all the complex game mechanics to me, the odd art style and characters, all the quirks and eccentric twists dotted through out the experience, and I just couldnt piece it together in my mind. How can game design be so scattered and frenetic, yet still maintain a coherent theme throughout? Or, if you will, a soul?"

Review: Until Dawn cranks up the creative horror meter | GameCrate

GC: Most horror stuff these days is hard to watch, mainly because it's settled so much into the mundane, you can see twists coming from a mile away. "Oh, the brother was dead this whole time." "Of course the best friend killed them all, because he's a jerk." Blah blah. However, on occasion, you find something that stands out due to its creativity, like It Follows or The Babadook.

The real horror of 'Until Dawn' is that Sony sent it to die

Engadget writes: "Are we, like, in a movie right now?" It's an apt question one of the handsome teens starring in PlayStation 4's latest exclusive, Until Dawn, asked about an hour after I picked up the controller. Yes. No. Maybe. It's kind of hard to explain, and it appears Sony would rather not. At its core, Until Dawn is an interactive teen-horror movie (think '90s genre staples Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer) set at a remote ski lodge where a murderous psychopath is on the loose. But after critics almost universally chastised Sony's other AAA tentpole, The Order: 1886, earlier this year for its gorgeous but bland cinematic leanings, "interactive movie" is a label the gaming juggernaut would rather not bandy about here. In fact, Sony would prefer you not pay attention to this game at all. It's getting no love from the company's marketing department and was weirdly absent from this June's E3 media briefing. And that's a damned shame because Until Dawn is one of the be...

GN: If you're not a fan of quick-time-event-driven games with an emphasis on plot over action (like Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain), then stop reading this right now and go check out another review. Until Dawn is not for you. If you are a fan of that genre of games, then keep reading. Until Dark is an interesting piece of interactive fiction that does a few new things.

NZG: Supermassive games has never tackled a horror game like Until Dawn before, and it shows. I mean that in a good way. From towel-clad teenagers to predictable jump scares, Until Dawn takes every single horror movie cliché you could think of and either turns it on its head or fully embraces it. There is no way for them to fall back on lazy tropes to get cheap scares that the player quickly becomes numb to. Instead, Supermassive Games has broken into the horror genre by focusing on keeping a tense atmosphere so that the player never has a chance to relax, and by playing to their strengths and utilising the motion controls of the PS4 controller.
