Darksiders Acquisition by Nordic Games Looks Bleak

VG Republic Writes: Nordic Games acquired the rights to a bevy of THQ licenses today in the liquidation of the companies assets due to bankruptcy for a rather meager amount considering the fact that they netted 150 individual skews for a total of $4.9 Million Dollars, as reported by Destructoid. The most notable title purchased was that of the Darksiders franchise. Some others included Red Faction, Destroy All Humans, and MX vs. ATV but Darksiders was the title that everyone was eyeing to see who would make the big play for the most recognizable game in THQs arsenal. Fans of the franchise had high hopes for someone making a play that could bring the full potential out in the franchise that has seemingly found its place amongst mediocrity. Gearbox picks up Homeworld IP

Borderlands developer acquires franchise from THQ in bankruptcy auction for undisclosed sum, plans to create new games for digital platforms.

Gearbox Software has acquired the Homeworld franchise, the Borderlands and developer announced today. The Plano, Texas company prevailed as the top bidder for the series during a recent THQ bankruptcy auction for remaining unsold franchises.

Terms of the deal were not specified and a Gearbox Software representative was not immediately available to comment. Gearbox outbid TeamPixel, which announced last week that a than it could for the series.

Writing in the , community manager Chris Faylor explained that chief creative officer Brian Martel "personally spearheaded the acquisition." He reportedly has a "great deal of love and respect" for Relic's original Homeworld and Homeworld 2.

No new Homeworld games were announced today, but Gearbox said whatever it makes in the future will preserve the "purest form" of the original games while also making them accessible on today's digital platforms.

Bidding for franchises left unsold after the January auction--including Red Faction and Darksiders (which is expected to be generated from the sale of remaining THQ IP.

Bidding for remaining THQ IP closed

Company received 17 bids for "certain" remaining franchises, expected to bring in as much as $7 million when sale closes next month.

Bidding for the ). Seventeen final bids for "certain" IP are expected to bring in between $6 and $7 million when the sale process closes by the end of May.

In February, THQ said it had received for various titles. Bidding opened on April 1, with final bids required to be posted by April 15.

Franchises up for bidding include Darksiders (which ), Red Faction, Homeworld, MX, and various other owned and licensed software, including Destroy all Humans! and Supreme Commander.

None of the bids were detailed in the document, though developer TeamPixel that it had been outbid by a mystery party for the Homeworld IP.

"The auction for the Homeworld license ended April 15, 2013, and while we reached qualified bidder status for the bankruptcy auction, we were unable to raise the necessary funds to remain competitive against the other parties at the auction," the company wrote.
