Knights of Pen and Paper + 1 Edition Review | Awesome Games

Vince from Awesome Games writes: 'Tabletop Dungeons and Dragons (DD) were a bit before my time growing up. At the point where I was old enough to understand the complexities of turn based, die-rolling, pencil-calculated combat, I had already been playing video games for years and saw little reason to use my own imagination to visualise adventures in faraway lands. Or maybe I just wasnt introduced to this rich and if you put your mind to it immersive experience early enough. Board games were for kids and families sitting around fireplaces in wool sweaters sipping cocoa. DD was for grown men with beards playing the roles of their favourite archetype, slinging a 20 sided die (d20) to resolve actions.'

Polygon: "Neverwinter certainly has room to grow, but the amount of game that's available with no barrier of entry neither fiscal nor educational is mind-boggling. It misses the mark somewhat on that Dungeons Dragons feeling of absolute character ownership, but that doesn't make the game any less refreshing to play. With its fast-paced combat and ubiquitously streamlined design, Neverwinter nails the concept of what an action-MMO should be."

Remember Arcades? Those wonderful places filled with so many games to enjoy in exchange for your quarters (or tokens)? No? Well, they used to be awesome and featured several entries in my favorite genre: beat-em-ups. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, Aliens Vs. Predator and The Simpsons were (and still are) some of the best examples of this type of game and, in 1993, CAPCOM used the Dungeons Dragons license to release Dungeons Dragons: Tower of Doom to bring something new to a classic genre.

In the early 90s if you were a kid wandering the floors of a musty arcade, pocket money jangling in your jeans and Pearl Jam blasting in your ears, youd almost certainly have come across at least one of the Dungeons Dragons coin-ops. Unique amongst their brethren for their multiple story paths, technical gameplay and faithful adherence to the source material, Tower of Doom and its sequel Shadow over Mystara were never as popular as more linear fare such as Turtles in Time, but they had a rich, inviting charm of their own. Until now, Capcoms cult side-scrolling beat-em-ups have never been ported over to consoles in Europe. Thankfully, this oversight has been addressed with the release of Dungeons Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara which bundles both coin-op ports into a shiny, downloadable treat. Pull on your coif, strap on your quiver and keep your twenty-pence pieces tucked safely away.
