Dave Payerle writes: I first experienced the Assassins Creed series with Assassins Creed II, a game that I loved in a lot of different ways. Since its also the last AC game I played, I was really looking forward to Assassins Creed IV Black Flag, to see where the series has gone during my time away. While it changes things up with a pirate-themed narrative, Black Flag is still unmistakably an Assassins Creed game. There are a few bumps in the road, but it still delivers on all of the elements I loved from before, along with some new systems added to the experience. Its an excellent entry in the series, and one that I enjoyed almost without exception.

Free running, fluid combat, visually beautiful environments and great mechanics are all in check in this year's Assassin's Creed. All of the franchise's main staples are present and as always, a whole new mechanic is the center of this year's installation, sailing. Along with the ability to steer and man your own ship, Black Flag brings in a few more smaller features that make it stand out. Unfortunately, the narrative and meta-plots don't fare as well as the aforementioned elements.

ACIV on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is almost too ambitious for its own good. Although it handily delivers a rich, fresh adventure on the dangerous Caribbean Sea, this first release is just flawed enough that you might want to play it on next-generation hardware (or PC) instead.

Pirates are ruddy brilliant, arent they? Why there arent more pirate games well never know; something about riding the open sea, smashing boats to bits and claiming all that lovely booty just works. So yeah, more pirate games please.
