Guacamelee Review | StickSkills

StickSkills said, "There just arent enough Metroidvania games inspired by spicy Mexican folklore on the market. Average 2D platformers that brandish vivid art styles and free exploration are a dime a dozen, but how often do we see one that slaps a colorful lucador mask over the heros face? Toronto-based developer DrinkBox Studios does just that with its PSN-exclusive title Guacamelee. But its not just this one aesthetic flair that makes the game a success. Instead, the quest of the valiant Juan Aguacate is worth experiencing because it never stops being fun. Guacamelee doesnt innovate with its beat-em-up nature and emphasis on backtracking to discover new secrets, but its wacky tone and unique setting give it a flavor all its own."

Review: Guacamelee! (DarkZero)

"Once upon a time, 2D platformers were the most dominant genre on the videogame market, with nearly every publisher trying to ride on the coattails of Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog with their own me too knockoffs. It was a genre as prevalent then as first-person shooters are today. But with the increasing popularity of indie games as well as the digital efforts from second- and third-party studios, 2D gaming has steadily been making a return to form, albeit in a more experimental variety than what was seen in the past. How long can developers continue to experiment with the second dimension before unique adventures like Super Meat Boy and Limbo begin to grow tiresome?" (DarkZero)

In my mind, DrinkBox Studios basically transformed into one of my favorite developers overnight, and they did an excellent job with Guacamelee. As a solid mix of combat, exploration, and heart, its a shining example for Metroidvanias everywhere.

"Mario and Rayman may be the few titles still clinging to the platforming genre in the retail space, but the downloadable market is wonderfully full of them. Drinkbox Studios is following their Tales from Space games with Guacamelee!, a 2D platformer set in Mexico that has you donning a luchador mask and jumping between the worlds of the living and dead to rescue your one true love, El Presidentes daughter. It is also following the brilliant strategy that Sony has implemented and is cross-buy between PSN and Vita." - David Rhinehart of Geekenstein.com

Guacamelee! Review | Analog Addiction

Analog Addiction writes: "Guacamelee! is Drinkbox Studios latest endeavor and it clearly stands as the best game their studio has ever developed. Having played and thoroughly enjoyed their previous games, Guacamelee feels like a major step for the studio, offering so much more than I expected. This 2D Metroid-Vania platformer utilizes PlayStations cross-save and cross-buy functionality, which allows players to transfer their saves between PS3 and Vita since they receive both versions with one purchase. Guacamelee never takes itself seriously, which is an admiring charm the game possesses. It allows itself to make some genuinely laugh-out-loud dialogue while producing a story as crazy as it is fun to "
