Opinion: It's Time to Stop Being Excited About The Last Guardian

Added: 17.06.2014 7:13 | 3 views | 0 comments

"Our entire relationship with The Last Guardian began with hearsay and speculation. It should be no surprise then that five years later seven years of development time our relationship is still based solely on fond memories and lofty expectations. We cant let this still be a PR lynchpin or an easy click magnet for us. We have to stop giving this property power."

Interview: Scott Rohde on Supporting Vita, the Last Guardian and Xbox Jibes | CVG

Unlike Microsoft, Sony's E3 press conference wasn't entirely focused on games that will be releasing later this year. The truth of the matter is that, thanks to the early lead it has achieved with PlayStation 4, it has been afforded the freedom to take a more measured approach, perhaps even restrained, approach to announcements. While there certainly were some big reveals at its E3 press conference, a trailer for Uncharted 4, LittleBigPlanet 3 and From Software's Bloodborne being a few notable examples, it also felt like the platform holder was keeping more than a few cards close to its chest.

If we ever cancel The Last Guardian we'll tell you, Sony's Yoshida promises

Polygon : "It's not just the long wait that drives these rumors, the game has run into some significant issues, including the departure of producer Fumito Ueda as a full-time employee at Sony. He does remain on the project as a consultant, but the story of the game's creation remains deeply hidden. So when I wrapped up my interview with Sony worldwide studios head Shuhei Yoshida with one more question, Yoshida knew what was coming. "It exists. The team is working hard on it," he intoned almost rhythmically. "I was heartbroken when some article came out on some major site saying it was canceled."

Shuhei Yoshida maintains the game is still in development and "the team is working hard on it".

"It exists. The team is working hard on it," Yoshida told Polygon, "I was heartbroken when some article came out on some major site saying it was cancelled."

Yoshida affirms that, should any title be cancelled, the company will say as such.

"I will say this," he adds, "When we cancel a title and it is something we have announced already, we'll say so.

"It's a highly anticipated title, we have to do so."

The Last Guardian was a no-show at this year's E3, so if it is to come out, you'd hope that Studio Japan will have something to show sooner rather...

The Tomb Raider teams up with Egyptian gods and rivals.
Remember in March last year, when Tomb Raider's creative director Noah Hughes told me that there were "no plans" to create a sequel to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light? Well it turns out he was lying. Or that the idea was greenlighted after our conversation. Either way, you should let bygones be bygones and check out the first gameplay trailer for Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, which is coming to Xbox One "soon".
