Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Review: Tall Tales | Digital Trends

Digital Trends: "Techland redeems the Call of Juarez series and then some with Gunslinger. This is an undeniably fresh and original take on what most would probably call an ailing franchise, and its a game that is absolutely worth investing a handful of hours in if youre a shooter fan. It may not reinvent the FPS, but Silas Greaves playable tall tale tweaks familiar formulas just enough to provide a memorable experience. No small feat for a download-only game that aims to compete in the mediums most popular genre."

In 2011, Techland released two major games: Call of Juarez: The Cartel and Dead Island. While Dead Island wasnt perfect, it was a fun game with some interesting mechanics. Call of Juarez: The Cartel, on the other hand, was a disaster, with poor gameplay mechanics and a storyline that many perceived as being racist and insensitive. So, naturally, when we learned that a new Call of Juarez game being released in the same year as a new Dead Island game, youd expect a repeat of 2011. However, Techland has completely flipped the tables, with Dead Island: Riptide being less than great and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger being an insanely fun game.

Drew Leachman writes: The Call of Juarez series has been a rollercoaster ride. The first two games were decent, with Bound in Blood being the best in the series. Then The Cartel released and took the it to an all new low. Techland decided that should not happen again and created Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. After putting some time into the new downloadable title, I can safely say this is the best game to date.

Review: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger The Good, The Bad The Awesome | HeyUGuys Gaming

HUGG Writes: Has Call of Juarez: Gunslinger made up for the mess left by The Cartel or has it shot itself in the foot. We get back in the saddle with our review. After the unmitigated disaster that was The Cartel, we honestly thought that Techland and Ubisoft would drop the Call of Juarez franchise all together, so when Gunslinger was announced, it was a bit of a surprise. The series has never set the world alight, but its debut Bound in Blood were solid and garnished some critical success. Even though Ubisoft have reduced their risk by offering Gunslinger as a download only title, and it has received little to no marketing, this game could put Call of Juarez back on the gaming landscape.

The Black Panel writes: Not only is Gunslinger the best Call to Juarez game to date, it is simply the most amount of fun to be had with a six-shooter this side of Red Dead Redemption. Entertaining score-based shooting, light RPG trappings and some of the best narration heard in games make this a blast. Throw in a super low price and Techlands latest becomes a no-brainer!

Review: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (XBOX 360) | Aussie-Gamer

Jayden Williams at Aussie-Gamer.com writes: "Pull out your six-shooters, Ubisofts Call of Juarez: Gunslinger makes a welcome return to the Old West after 2011s modern-day and lacklustre The Cartel. The forth game in Ubisofts Call of Juarez series, Gunslinger forgoes the retail path of its predecessors, and instead wanders along the download-only path. With a generously sized campaign and two arcade-style modes, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger packs in a lot of bang for your buck. But it is worth the investment? We find out!"

TCO writes: "Theres nothing worse than being super excited for a new game to come out, only to find out that its terrible once you actually get to play it. Well, Call of Juarez: The Cartel was like that for me and it made me doubt Techlands ability to ever make a good game in the series. When they announced Gunslinger, I wanted to be excited but I just couldnt get past how disappointing The Cartel had been. Now that Gunslinger is finally out, did Techland prove me wrong? Did they finally make a good Call of Juarez game? Lets find out."
