Gears of War! The iconic gameplay The amazing emotional rollercoaster! The love of grabbing a few mates and battling it out in close quarters 3rd person Contact! But Have Epic killed the series? Have Microsoft, Black Tusk, and Rod Ferguson stepped in just in time to save us from the awful Gears of War Judgment style game that frankly robbed us of the game the fans adored?

Feature: Gears Of War: Has Microsoft Committed An Epic Fail?

Gears of War is now the sole property of Microsoft with developer Black Tusk taking up development. But can it survive without the touch of Epic Games?

You may have noticed, however, that so far I've only talked about the original trilogy. Judgment - released in March of last year - felt like a huge misstep. Existing to keep brand awareness alive - and given its sales you'd be hard-pressed to fault Microsoft for wanting it to continue - it tweaked with a formula in ways that wasn't necessary, telling a story that didn't need to be told. The multiplayer certainly had its moments, but it was far from what many had come to expect. It withered in the memory - the previous titles had set up shop there.

Which brings us to the...

Ed dusts off his Lancer and takes a swing at the mostly mysterious future.
So, the Gears of War franchise is now firmly wed to Xbox, till death or another multi-million dollar transaction do them part. I'm honestly rather surprised. The first three games were big hitters, clocking up near 20 million sales between them, but last year's Gears of War: Judgment (which I loved) was a damp squib, raking in a fraction of Gears of War 3's sales during their respective weeks of release.

Biggest Disappointment 2013

SimCity - Biggest Disappointment 2013

Platform: PC
Publisher: EA
Developer: Maxis

There's always plenty of disappointment to go around during a year of new consoles. Knack received the brunt from critics for being laboriously repetitive and padded, while both God of War: Ascension and Gears of War: Judgment fell short of expectations as prequels to trilogies that were already complete. But since these games were all playable and even somewhat enjoyable, none of these compare to the problems with Grand Theft Auto Online and all the disconnections and the lack of heists. It is that single blemish on Grand Theft Auto V, no matter how much Rockstar would like to separate it from the main game, and though the online portion has largely been fixed and amended now, the effects still linger.

Batman: Arkham Origins Review (ThisisXbox)

ThisisXbox: "2013 is the year of the prequel. With Gears of War: Judgment making waves on our side of the spectrum, and God of War: Ascension punching gods in the faceover there, Batman: Arkham Origins was the only one to be met with some form of distain. The reason being that the Arkham series is so beloved and so well-made, that when it was announced that London based Rocksteady wouldnt be making this, but rather WB Games, people thought it may not be quite up to scratch. Let me quell those fears right now, the game is identical to Arkham City, in the gameplay sense. On a personal level, I believe that Arkham City is near enough the perfect game, so I should automatically love this right? Its not without its faults, but read on and find out why I think the game is well worth your precious time."
