The end of the Metal Gear Solid series has finally reached us. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has released after much anticipation and brings a massive amount of new gameplay and narrative twists to the 28 year old series. With the controversy surrounding Hideo Kojima leaving Konami and the company going through a change in its game development philosophies, it is unlikely we will ever see another entry into the series.

MCV: Konamis Metal Gear Solid V debuts at the top of the charts this week, but it failed the beat the Week One sales of both the Batman: Arkham Knight and The Witcher III. It is also the best-selling week one for the series so far, beating the sales of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty by 37 per cent. The PlayStation 4 SKU was the best-selling edition, claiming 72 per cent of all sales, while the Xbox One SKU claimed 22 per cent. Meanwhile, the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions formed only five per cent of the stealth titles sales overall. Warner Bros Mad Max debuts in second place, while Gears of War: Ultimate Edition falls to No.3 with a 64 per cent drop in sales.

More than six years of hard work and investment has come down to this week. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain cost Konami more than any other game it has ever funded at over $80 million, and it's demonstrated that it's very concerned as to whether or not it'll get its money back. A lot was riding on this release, and judging by early sales it'll be a big financial gain.

Does controversy change how you feel about a video game or does it exist in a vacuum? Are we rewarding Konami's behavior by purchasing the game? Would we be punishing Kojima to boycott it? I feel Kojima has given his blessing and we can simply enjoy his masterpiece.
