Three years ago, the title Amnesia: The Dark Descent provided Swedish game producer Frictional Games with an unexpected breakout hit. Not only was Amnesia a scary and fantastically produced game, it inspired a whole generation of developers to re-evaluate what horror really meant. Since then theres been a ton of imitators, but a lot of these are missing that perfect blend of gameplay, story and sound design that made Amnesia so scary. In short: people have been longing for a worthy successor.

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs Review - Squeals and Furyehz | The Escapist

Escapist - "Oh, you men of vision and ambition, purveyors of a new world, a brighter future and a better day for all humanity. You tempt us with succor but scald us with iniquity; glorious deception is your stock in trade! Rather like Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, you might say, which despite its promise of a new and twisted descent into horror, fails to deliver anything more than a few startle-scares and a story that starts with promise but ultimate succumbs to incomprehensibility."

Hooked Gamers: "Im going to be honest with you again. I played most of Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs in the daytime. But, I did have the curtains drawn, so that counts for something, right? I went into the game with trepidation, its a rare occurrence for just the name of a game to bring strong emotions out of you before you even play. However, the extremely high quality of the game meant that after the first break I took, I was actually eager to jump right back in. The blood curdling story which has you twisting between empathy and loathing is truly fantastic, and its one of the best reasons to put aside any fears you may have and play this great game."

am·ne·sia (n) partial or total loss of memory, usually resulting from shock, psychological disturbance, brain injury, or illness. Amnesia: The Dark Descent was widely regarded as a masterpiece in what was considered to be, at the time of release, one of the most depleted genres of gaming : Survival Horror. Publishers of great Survival Horror games such as Resident Evil and Dead Space have, to a large extent, turned their back on the genre and instead opted to pursue a much more action focused experience. The results of these shifts into the third person action genre have been less than satisfactory in the case of the Resident Evil games, with the abysmal Operation Raccoon City and mediocre Resident Evil 6 having tarnished the name of the series. Luckily for Horror fans, Frictional Games came to the rescue and reignited interest in the genre with the release of The Dark Descent. Now, with the series reins having been handed to Dear Esther developers The Chinese Room, can Amnesi...
