Steam Machines look slick, but who's going to buy them?

Added: 09.01.2014 2:16 | 7 views | 0 comments

GamesRadar - Valve has officially entered the console wars. While the Washington-based juggernaut has been a major player in the industry for years, Valves influence was most potent on one side of the PC/console divide. All that changed with the announcement of 13 new machines for the Steam Machine lineup at CES. Manufactured and sold by high-end shops like Alienware, Digital Foundry, and Origin, the boxes themselves are sleek, powerful, and expensive. Running from $500 to over $6000, these devices are certainly impressive--but their boutique prices leave them struggling to fit into any meaningful niche.

Vavle's Gabe Newell has confirmed that the company has no plans to release a Steam Machine of its own. Instead, you'll have to buy one from one if its many hardware partners.

Speaking at CES, Newell explained: We're going to continue to make that decision as we go along. We've been happy with the results of doing hardware development with clients. We have plans to build more machines, but we also expect that users will be really happy with the range of offerings from these hardware manufacturers.

Are There Too Many Steam Machines?

Added: 08.01.2014 19:16 | 6 views | 0 comments

Hardcore Gamer: Valves shocking decision to enter the hardware space for gaming was met with plenty of skepticism upon its announcement, but as 2013 came to a close, it became clear that they werent messing around with their Steam Machine concept. Run entirely by the SteamOS operating system, the Steam Machines were built for Steam-based gaming in mind. Valve got hardware manufacturers in on their vision and at CES 2014, the curtain was drawn and the Steam Machines finally appeared. All fourteen of them. Thats a lot of choices to browse, each with its own architecture, specs and price point. But for a living room device, is this vastly diverse array of Steam Machines a fruitful bounty of choice, or is it too overwhelming a selection for the average consumer, especially with dedicated consoles offering simplicity and straightforwardness already in place?

Maximum PC: One of the reasons why Valve is pushing its Steam Machine platform is to get PC gamers into their living rooms, hence the prep work that went into Big Picture mode and the wireless Steam Controller. Going along with that theme, boutique builder Origin PC announced plans to launch a pair of Steam Machine "Chronos" systems built in a small form factor (SFF) chassis that will have no trouble blending into a typical home theater setup.

One of those companies is Maingear, a boutique builder out of New Jersey that decided to go with an AMD foundation inside a small form factor (SFF) chassis for its take on a Steam Machine. The aptly named Spark measures only 4.5 inches wide by 4.23 inches deep by 2.34 inches high and weighs less than a pound.
