Eurogamer - Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Review

EG:Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse is an enjoyable, polished, satisfying game. It may only be a few hours long, but it's worth a tenner. It's perfect for those afternoons when all you want to do is close the curtains and collect rainbow gems while listening to some nice music. Just don't expect to remember the experience in 23 years. Or indeed next Tuesday.

Its been 23 years since the original Castle Of Illusion first appeared on the Sega Mega Drive, pitting Mickey Mouse against the evil witch Mizarabel in an attempt to save love interest, Minnie. I remember playing a bit of it when I was younger, and reminiscing that I wasnt great at it, but I was only around six years old. Under the guidance of the originals director, Emiko Yamamoto, Sega Studios Australia have brought Castle Of Illusion into the modern age.

VideoGamer: "Like some sort of video game equivalent of Stephen King's IT, Castle of Illusion haunted me as a child, and has now returned, years later, to appall me as an adult. A lot of care and attention has gone into recreating the Mega Drive original's stages for a new generation, and the structure has been changed akin to Super Mario 64's hub world. But the platforming and control mechanics on offer here wouldn't cut it in any era."

Some things are best left in the past.

It's a game that requires both accuracy and timing from the player, often throwing them into situations that require them to attack and navigate in tandem, using enemies to bounce Mickey across fairly intricate stages. Good in theory, but Sega Australia's work gives them little chance of achieving those goals thanks to terrible input lag, imprecise movement and spotty collision detection.

Pressing jump sees Mickey leap what seems like six weeks after the command was given, and his airborne movement, which is overly quick with no sense of weight or inertia, compounds what is...

New Releases this week | Sept 2nd - Sept 8th

Added: 02.09.2013 7:18 | 4 views | 0 comments

Bit of an average week for releases. The featured game this week is none other than Diablo III. Will console gamers welcome it with open arms or will it be largely ignored? Only time will tell. Other releases this week includes Mickey Mouse making a comeback, a couple rhythm games, a farmers dream game and a return to Helghan. This list was correct at time of publishing. Dates may change at short notice.
