Mickey Mouse hasnt had an easy time of it in games of late. The Epic Mickey series showed so much promise but each entry disappointed, including the supposed successor to Castle of Illusion on the Nintendo 3DS; Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion. Luckily this disappointing trend stops here with the remake of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, a game initially released in 1990 on the Sega Mega Drive.

Review: Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse | PSNStores

PSNStores - Despite some of my frustration with DuckTales Remastered its been really cool to see two Disney platformers come back both within weeks of each other. Castle of Illusion takes you on a quest to save Minnie from Mizrabel who is threatening to suck the beauty out of Minnie for herself. Just as in the original, Mickey Mouse will need to collect seven gems hidden throughout the Castle of Illusions in order to create a bridge to where Minnie is being held. This isnt just a remake though. What became evident almost immediately is that Castle of Illusions subverts your expectations of what constitutes a remake.

Paul from DJ Podcasts writes "Mickey Mouse and The Castle of Illusion was one of my all-time SEGA master system / Game Gear favorites that I as a young teen played through many times over, exploring every nook and cranny that there was possible. Fast forward to 2013 and the HD remake for current generation consoles is now available and this is your chance to go back and relive those memories from the 8-bit days, or if not, explore it from todays perspective and hopefully become as enchanted I was back in the early 90s."

Weekly Digital: Breath of Fire II, I choose you

"Nothing else in the digital realm of games matters this week, because the greatest SNES RPG of all time has made its way onto the Wii U Virtual Console. Yes, I am of course talking about Breath of Fire II, a game very near and dear to my heart. If you can forgive the early 90s-era translation and the frequent random encounters, youll find a game with a surprisingly dark story, ripe with religious overtones (before Final Fantasy Tactics and Xenogears made it cliché), unique and personable characters and a neat town-building sidequest. Also, protagonist Ryu can morph into a freaking dragon. That alone should be worth the $7.99 price tag (or $1.50 if you own it on Wii). Now, if you dont have a Wii U, the Church of St. Eva will forgive your transgression if you look into some of the other cool releases of the week, most notably the return of psychological horror, point-and-click adventure game I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream on GOG.com. Other notables include the long-awai...

While most Players who played the original will feel right at home; with this new iteration; there have several new modernisations in order to keep things feeling fresh for new players. The Graphics on display are excellent, displaying plenty of eye- candy for the visual connoisseur; though purists of the original may cry foul at not opting for the traditional sprite work. The Audio work is no less impressive; boasting re-mastered tracks extracted from the original framework, there are plenty of tracks that will surely get you smiling; the only downside perhaps being that some of the compositions can be a little distracting in certain levels that said its a minor quibble.

Chad from We Got This Covered wrote: This summer has seen the resurgence of two of gamings most beloved classic platformers. First came DuckTales Remastered, a solid and true remake that was unfortunately too frustrating and dated to recommend wholeheartedly. Now, theres another retro revisit from the Magical Kingdom to speak of: 1990s Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, which debuted on the SEGA Genesis before being ported to the companys handheld Game Gear.
