GI: Crossovers can be a good way to create something new or breathe fresh life into a series. This isnt an exact science, but when crossovers work, it results in a product that is better than the sum of its parts. Melding the Mystery Dungeon and Etrian Odyssey series together for Etrian Mystery Dungeon is a shining example of a successful crossover. By combining the RPG elements and aesthetics of Etrian Odyssey with the roguelike dungeon crawling of Mystery Dungeon, players get a game that is addictive and satisfying.

WP: Etrian Mystery Dungeon is an example of two great ideas coming together like peanut butter and chocolate. It's a mix of the Shiren the Wanderer-style Mystery Dungeon roguelike gameplay and Etrian Odyssey-style party composition and design, and it successfully combines the strengths of both genres. It isn't a perfect mix, and some elements do clash, but it works more often than it doesn't.

DC: Combining the maddening and dedicated labyrinths of Etrian Odyssey with Mystery Dungeon's ode to indifferent but committed variability would seem to be the videogame equivalent of pushing an immovable object against an unstoppable force. It's an attractive paradox, and, rather than explode on contact, both series' unique strengths coalesce into a grueling exploration of applied skill and tough love.

GU: When one thinks of a mash-up game in the last couple years, generally its either made up of one of its parts more than the other or a deviation from both that doesnt cater to either pieces of its source material. So when Atlus and Spike Chunsoft announced their own mashup of the Etrian Odyssey and Mysterious Dungeon series it seemed like a match made in heaven, combining the party-building and story lore of the Etrian series and the hard but rewarding dungeon crawling aspects of the Mysterious Dungeon series. That alone isnt a surefire recipe for success, but both sides managed to meet that lofty goal with Etrian Mystery Dungeon.

GC: Video game mashups can be a great thing. Taking two different IPs and blending them together can create something that's just as good, if not better than the original. At the very least, seeing concepts, characters and systems spun off into different contexts can deliver a refreshing romp for fans of the source materials.
