After testing Japanese amiibo cards with various North American games such as Mario Kart and Captain Toad, the Japanese cards work just fine with NA games. Unless Nintendo has added something to their NFC chips to change this with future software (awaiting comment from Nintendo), players looking to avoid Japan's card shortage being magnified abroad should feel safer when deciding whether or not to import the cards.
