Abyss Odyssey is the kind of game that only an indie developer could make. Taking elements from platforming, fighting, RPG, and roguelike games then jamming them all together, Abyss Odyssey sounds like some crazy experiment that could only end in disaster. Yet somehow, all of these disparate elements come together to form a unique 2D side scrolling adventure that will entertain and delight almost any gamer, especially those who have become tired of the samey feel that many AAA titles have these days.

Abyss Odyssey is a roguelike (which is a genre named after the gaming classic Rogue) in the sense that the dungeon is randomly generated, and death is permanent (though in this case you do keep gold and experience earned). You jump from area to area in the fashion of a 2D platformer, and battle enemies with the mechanics of a fighting game. ACE Team claims inspiration from classics like Smash Bros. and Street Fighter.

James Bowden: "Abyss Odyssey is absolutely the sum of its parts. While its platforming and fighter credentials might not hold up individually, their combination alongside the roguelike sensibilities and community co-operation help elevate these lacking mechanics to be something more compelling than they would be alone. A curious experiment, and one thats well worth continued testing."

Abyss Odyssey Lets Play Co-Op Campaign on PC

Added: 16.07.2014 22:13 | 3 views | 0 comments

EB's Matt Heywood writes "In the Lets Play video above myself and Ray Porreca travel the depths of the Abyss with dreams of conquering the mighty Warlock that resides in its underbelly. I played as Ghost Monk, who is one of the three available warriors, and Ray played as Katrien, a more nimble combatant and the first warrior to be made available to new players. Players can choose one of three starting points, with each one being harder than the last, but the harder they are the less floors you must travel to reach the Warlock. We opted for the Santa Lucia starting point, which is the longest road to the Warlock, but its also the easiest. Not that any of the routes are that easy, as Abyss Odyssey throws quite the challenge at players of all skill levels."
