News: DICE 'begged' EA to develop Star Wars: Battlefront

Different studio was almost given Battlefront dev duty, EA reveals.

"[DICE developing Star Wars: Battlefront] was almost not happening," Soderlund said in an interview with CVG. "It was just something as boring as resources and availability. The DICE guys Karl Magnus Troedsson and Patrick Bach were talking and I told them we were in dialogues with Disney over this deal and they just looked at me and said, 'Why haven't you spoken to us? What are you doing? We want to make Battlefront.'"

DICE has been trying to crank out the right Mirror's Edge 2 concept for years, EA Games executive vice-president Patrick S#246;derlund has confessed to CVG in an E3 interview, but the franchise's future was never really in doubt. As is the way with post-reveal exec pronouncements, he was unable to share much about how the long-awaited sequel will play, but did cite story and difficulty as key areas for improvement over Mirror's Edge 1.

Patrick Bach says competition in the AAA shooter space is "beneficial for everyone."

Producer Patrick Bach has commented on the competition that , and others in 2014.

Bach told GameSpot that competition in the shooter market is good for consumers and that Battlefield 4 will emerge as the "best game" if it can stay true to the core of Battlefield.

"I think [competition is] beneficial for everyone. Consumers, first, of course, they get more choice," Bach said. "For us, we need to think about what is Battlefield really about so we don't dilute the franchise in any way. We need to focus down on what makes Battlefield awesome, and make it even more awesome.

"And I think Battlefield 4 hopefully is a good testament that we're doing that. I can't really see any downside to having multiple games being great," he added. "I'm happy for the consumer, first, and I think we will step up our game to fight the competition even harder. We think we have the best game; we need to prove it."
