Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain continues where we saw the Boss last: hospitalized and disfigured by the bomb blast. The soldier has lost an arm in the chaos and his body has been invaded by over 100 foreign bodies -- a mixture of human teeth and shrapnel -- but the incident seems to have damaged something far more critical: his psyche.

GB: The horse seems to go directly against the series history of sneaky stealth play, but its a necessity as it lets Snake close expanses of Afghan desert in this vast, mission-based sandbox. Its not quite an open-world game it still has the trademark convoluted Kojima story but it has definitely taken some cues from the popular gaming genre. You can call your horse from anywhere (like in The Witcher 3). But watch out: He can take a few hits, but hes not invincible, and he knows nothing about stealth.

IGN: We only got a glimpse of Kojima Productions first attempt at a open world stealth game in Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. But believe me, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is much, much bigger than that. After spending 12 hours with the near-final game, I'm impressed by just how much there is to the next chapter in the Metal Gear series. It has near endless ways to tackle a scenario, an arsenal of weapons, gear, and a home base to develop from the ground up. The enemies are fun to fight, choke, slam, and disarm. And, most importantly, every completed mission and resource gathered contributes to the bigger whole, since you re-build Snake's world one piece at a time.

GR: Typical. You play 16 hours of Metal Gear Solid 5, choke hundreds of Russian guards, disable an armoured tank with C4, flee from a chopper gunship as your horses hooves crumble an Afghan cliff edge and tackle a lightning-fast super-soldier unit of Skulls with experimental governmental weaponry but its Billy Idol who kills you. Ok, we werent *directly* taken out by the bleach-haired 1980s rock artist, but by our desire to steal his song Rebel Yell for our tape collection and its this insane desire to risk everything in the quest for rare items, resources, equipment and, er, a Long Eared Hedgehog, that typifies everything thats mad, spectacular and uniquely *Kojima* about MGS5.

DTOID: I played somewhere near 14 hours of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, from the beginning, and I can hardly tell you anything about it because of a super long coverage embargo that includes broad agreement to not discuss story, plot, or cutscenes at all. It's some appropriately Cold War era [redacted]-ing. So no spoiler warning, I guess? It's a bit weird. The situation, not The Phantom Pain. The Phantom Pain is really, really weird.

Beside one of the toughest boss situations in any game ever, there were plenty of special and unexpected events. Like when one discovers that the torn-down power lines laying in the water you just stepped in can kill, or when you meet a huge bear in the middle of the woods, attach it to a Fulton balloon and send it to the Mother Base. Good times."
