On Metal Gear Solid V, Mad Max and the Ethical Role of Reviewers

Added: 09.09.2015 16:17 | 75 views | 0 comments

Rich at GameSpew writes: "Last Tuesday saw the release of what for many will probably be the game of the year, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The latest entry in the highly regarded Metal Gear series, it was undoubtedly hyped beyond measure thanks to a constant barrage of media coverage about the game itself and the apparent fallout between its creator, Hideo Kojima, and his employer Konami. With mainstream press attending camps to review the game, before launch day it had already acquired a bewildering number of glowing reviews awarding the title 5/5 and 10/10 scores. Youd honestly believe it heralded a new age of videogames given the amount of praise bestowed upon it. Released on the same day, and therefore pretty much sent out to die, was a new game based on the Mad Max film franchise. Developed by Avalanche Studios of Just Cause fame, review copies for this title were sent out for the day of release, meaning that reviews trickled through shortly after its muted launch...

Review: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Will Divide Die-Hard Fans [EGMR]

Added: 09.09.2015 14:17 | 7 views | 0 comments

EGMR writes: "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain left me conflicted as a die-hard MGS fan. It certainly has some of the best gameplay of this entire series, and it's easily one of the most intelligent, player-driven and amazing open world games this generation so far. It offers a phenomenal amount of content and runs like a dream, which is bound to embarrass other triple A titles. Yet being so deeply invested in this story and series it left me feeling underwhelmed and disappointed at how minimal the story is, and how it didn't feel like a farewell. It may leave you looking for and wanting more out of the story, which has not happened before in the history of this series. The result, despite being astounding to play, felt like a core part of the experience was missing. The Phantom Pain may not be Kojima's cinematic and narrative masterpiece, but it is close to that purely as a video game experience."

Debating Metal Gear Solid V

GI We just got back from a long weekend, and both Andrew Reiner and I spent much of the that time playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It's been a polarizing release, with some old-school fans decrying the game's open-world direction and lack of a traditional narrative. As it turns out, Reiner and I see the game differently, as well. I decided to try to get into his head a little bit and get him to articulate his biggest beefs.
