Dead Island: Riptide doesnt fix whats broken with the first game, which is odd given the amount of details that desperately need to be repaired. The concept of an open world zombie survival game is still good on paper, but somehow Techland has failed for a second time to make sure it works in execution.

Dealspwn.com writes: "Techland have effectively released a large expansion pack that offers a practically identical gameplay experience; another island full of shambling monstrosities to clumsily brutalise with home-made weaponry and fetch quests a go-go. Can Dead Island impress now that (as B.B. King once famously sang) the thrill is gone?
Not really."

Even though I have these gripes with the game, Dead Island Riptide had me hooked again. I love the open world gameplay, the weird but ironically charming characters and the first person zombie slashing, using the weapons I crafted or got from beating a massive zombie berserker. Techland has managed to rope me back in and take a deep dive into a beautiful zombie infested tropical island that I couldnt stop looting. If you loved Dead Island then Riptide is a game you will want to jump into as it feels just as fun, addicting and rewarding as its predecessor.

"Dead Island Riptide was one of my most anticipated games of this year, as I absolutely loved the first game and couldnt wait to see what our group of survivors were up to this time around. I mean, its an Open World, First-Person Shooter with RPG elements that has you killing zombies, exploring a huge island and collecting loot. Its got a little bit of everything that I love about video games and I couldnt have been more excited when I got my hands on the sequel last week."

"Dead Island Riptide splits the difference between the original game's terrible and great moments to create a serviceable followup, which is still enjoyable by definition, if not quite as memorable." - Mike C, Velocity Gamer

AtomicGamer: "The biggest issue with Dead Island Riptide is that it's a glorified expansion pack sold at nearly full price ($40 US on PC, $50 on consoles); there's nothing wrong with a developer doing this if they're adding lots of features and are building on top of a near-universally beloved game, but the simple fact is that neither of those conditions really apply here. It's still fun to slice zombies up and on PC the game looks decent, runs online with four-player coop just fine, and is at least somewhat unique, but these tepid words I'm using should give you the impression that Dead Island Riptide just doesn't add enough on top of the original to really excel. It works and it's generally fun, but don't expect a revolution."

OXM UK: "We don't buy into the game as a killer co-op experience, as there's very little beneficial interaction between characters. What you're feeling isn't the buzz of great game design, but the relief of having a friend to break the monotony of island life. It's so much easier to forgive glitches, outdated visuals and flick-book framerate when you've got a friend laughing at them too, but this doesn't mean we should forgive them. Should Riptide wash up on your shore, you'd best throw in back in."

GR:You must really love Dead Island for you to feel totally worth going for Riptide. Otherwise, it makes more sense to invest in Left 4 Dead if it's zombie action that attracts, or Borderlands 2 and it's co-op and lootande which is main attraction.
