Whether it is a 4X strategy game like Galactic Civilizations III and Endless Space, a real time strategy game like Sins of a Solar Empire or Homeworld, a space simulation game like X3: Albion Prelude and Elite: Dangerous, a space combat game like Tachyon: The Fringe and Tie Fighter, or an action-RPG like the Mass Effect series, I absolutely love the setting. It is fairly common for me to prowl the 'net in search of more games set in space for hours at a time, soaking up any information that I could find. Now, my particular obsession with space-based titles actually came fairly late into my gaming career; while I have always enjoyed the genre and picked up titles when I could, I was previously afflicted with a similar obsession with standard fantasy tropes (dragons, elves, dwarves, orcs, etc.)

One of the first NPCs you encounter in Knights of the Old Republic 2 refers to the Jedi/Sith conflict from the first game as "the Jedi Civil War". It's a beautiful phrase that forces you to imagine events from another perspective. The average cantina patron has no idea what a Sith is or how the dark side works. All they see is a bunch of terrifying space wizards thumping one another with laser swords over a religious schism. That's what I love about KOTOR 2: it takes a universe of light and dark, and paints it in shades of grey.

As a huge fan of anything MMO related I was very excited by the hype surrounding ArcheAge. High quality, non-instanced player housing? A player driven economy? True exploration around a massive world? Sign me up! I have drifted from one MMO to another for the past nine years, ever since divorcing my one true MMO love in disgust when they released the catastrophic, ill-informed and doomed-to-fail New Game Enhancements. Yes, I admit it, my name is Chris and I was a Star Wars Galaxies fan. As a game it had many flaws that ranged from the charming to the utterly ridiculous, however I stuck with it for as long as I could. Would ArcheAge grab my attention as my first MMO love did all those years ago?
