Something that many younger gamers may not realize is that the 7th generation consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii) went on for far longer than any console cycle before it. A typical console cycle is about four to five years. What made the last one so long? Well, that is a very broad topic. Part of it was the economic crash of 2008, with every major corporation being hit and not willing to take risks. The other part is the rise of the Indie gaming scene and the ways it was being shown that great stories could be told without the latest high-def graphics. Thinking minds were expanding gaming, and things just got very complicated.
