| What If Sony and Nintendo Had Never Split?
Added: 27.07.2015 4:18 | 9 views | 0 comments
As we know, the Nintendo 64 still kept the cartridge port, leaving it in a category all by itself with Sonys PS1 and SEGAs Saturn system both sporting disc drives. However, this wasnt originally the case. Nintendo had previously partnered up with Sony to develop a brand new system that also featured a disc drive; the aforementioned Nintendo-Sony PlayStation. Unfortunately, the two had a big fallout and the system was left to die. Sony later took the idea and recreated it into what we now know as the PS1. Therefore, it is very much true that Nintendo was the actual creator of their biggest adversary in the console market.
Now Ive known about this little debacle for a bit of time, but I never really thought about it deeply until that picture surfaced a few weeks ago. It made me wonder: You know, what if that actually came to light? What if Sony and Nintendo were still close partners even today?

The first real video game console war was detailed expertly in one of my favorite non-fiction books, aptly titled Console Wars by Blake J. Harris. Its a story of drama, suspense, and even intrigue, and shows how Nintendo eventually bested SEGA to knock the rival company out of the console game. There are funny parts about how SEGA built Sonic the Hedgehog from scratch to compete with Mario (Sonic originally had fangs, a guitar and a busty girlfriend), and intense moments like when SEGA realized the Saturn was doomed once they understood Nintendo had the 64 on the horizon with the original PlayStation not far behind.
This latest console war, PS4 vs. Xbox One, started out in a way that seemed like it had the same high stakes. No gamer will likely soon forget E3 2013 where Sony announced that not only was there no question that the PS4 would play used games (something Microsoft seemed poised to abandon), but the system would debut for $400, a full $100 less than the Kinect-connec...
