Has Video Game Music Lost its Way?

Added: 24.01.2014 19:16 | 10 views | 0 comments

Hardcore Gamer: When someone asks you whats the best piece of video game music you can think of?, what do you say? The theme from Super Mario Brothers? Sonic the Hedgehog 2s Chemical Plant Zone? Gruntildas Lair from Banjo-Kazooie? But would you ever think of a game like Mass Effect, Resident Evil or Tom Clancys Splinter Cell? Probably not. Some of the most legendary gaming chords to be strummed have emerged from those retro games, those pixelated classics that gamers love playing, those beeping symphonies that have since been remixed dozens of times by avid online musicians. But why is that? Why do we think of those aged classics when we think of fantastic music in video games? The answer is pretty simple: gaming music has taken an unfortunate nosedive in quality since then. Its been drained of creativity and has simply become a faceless score behind an action-packed visual foreground.

The cover to Tom Clancys Splinter Cell: Conviction featured a young looking Fisher posing atop a nameless spider-eyed soldier. I thought Ubisofts decision to create a dance game in the Clancy universe was a bit of an odd one, but also very inventive--this could be the beginning of a whole new genre! Action/dance, or stealth/dance. So I was surprised when the game was released and described by gamers around the world as an action-adventure/stealth game."
