Dying Light designer: we had to step back from becoming too much like Dead Island

After splitting from publisher Deep Silver and losing the Dead Island license, Techland had to come up with some new ideas to set its upcoming zombie survival game Dying Light apart.
As lead designer Maciej Binkowski explained to Strategy Informer in a recent interview, that wasn't always an easy process; "I'll tell you, there were times we had to step back and say this is too much like Dead Island"," he admitted.

Can the Dead Island developer conquer the realm of Gothic fantasy?.
Techland's first foray into fantasy action started out as a Dead Island mode, and it shows. Seeing it back-to-back with the studio's other game, Dying Light, it's very clear that it's built on the same tech (Chrome Engine 6, software fans), designed to give you a first-person view of hitting things with heavy bits of metal.

From Strategyinformer.com: "Please don't get confused. After the first Dead Island did hugely well Deep Silver were confident that they could turn it into a franchise, which is why we're expecting three Dead Island games right now. There's a MOBA, a third-person more adventure-y spin-off, and Dead Island 2. No, Riptide wasn't a proper sequel. And no, Techland (who made the first two games) aren't doing this, they're off doing the similar but more serious and parkour-driven Dying Light. Dead Island 2 though, from Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager, is looking good. We've got an interview up already, now you can read what we thought of the game itself. ".

| I Want To Play Video Games, Not Grind Through "Content"

Earlier this week, Techland announced that its new zombie-killing adventure Dying Light will have "50+ hours of gameplay." Some might considering this good news. Yannick LeJacq doesn'tat least at face value.
Why? Because 50 hours is a long f--- time to spend in any video game, and Yannick LeJacq doesn't trust Techland enough as a developer to believe they know how to guide me through such a slog gracefully. Yannick LeJacq took me roughly half that time to play their last zombie game, Dead Island Riptide. Yannick LeJacq loved the first few hours, and couldn't stand the rest.

A year on from last years interview with Tymon Smektala of Techland the suspense of where Dying Light was now just too much to bear. Zombie hacking, smashing, beating and my now favourite trapping just could not be contained.
