The game is, at its heart, a platformer. You start off as Thomas, a square representing an AI program. As the game goes on you meet up with other AI that come in various block type shapes. You can switch control between them on the fly and this is necessary in order to traverse the levels. Different AI work together in different ways as they all have different abilities. The game play is sublime and perfectly tuned.

Thomas Was Alone | Review (Only Single Player)

"Can rectangles make you cry? Prior to playing Mike Bithells independent puzzle platformer Thomas Was Alone, Id never had to ask myself that question. Of course they couldnt, Id probably have scoffed in response. How could mere shapes, flat and boringly symmetrical ones at that, ever be able to evoke such a heartfelt reaction? However, after actually playing Thomas, and being exposed to a delightful and heartwarming tale of scattered, unique individuals putting aside their differences and finding solace in a newfound friendship, Im no longer so sure. Even now, as I stare at the white fuzz and sharp corners of my computer screen, Im having trouble expressing exactly how transfixed and overjoyed I felt while playing. One thing, however, is for certain. The answer to a certain other question, one by the name of are games art?, has become easier to answer." (Michael Urban, OnlySP.com)

GamerTell Review: Thomas Was Alone

Added: 27.04.2013 19:18 | 6 views | 0 comments

From the review, "I cant even determine when I started caring so much about these quadrilaterals. I suspect it was when Chris was introduced, because his personality was in such stark contrast to Thomas, but I really cant tell. All I know is, by about the fifth chapter I started shipping these rectangles. Claire and John are my favorite pairing, though I also love Chris and Laura and Thomas and Sarah. In my mind, Thomas and James also become BFFs. I think thats a testament to just how good Thomas Was Alone is."

gamrReview's Karl Koebke: "Don't take this as a slight to Thomas Was Alone, which is for the most part a fantastic game that features some of the best storytelling I've had the privilege to experience in a game. But unless you just want to donate some money to the developer and Sony, or you find even the tiniest amount of more Thomas Was Alone gameplay to be irresistible, then I suggest skipping this one."
