DUST 514: EVE Culture Shock and Grief University

Added: 20.05.2013 21:18 | 0 views | 0 comments

The Mittani writes: 'It has been three days since spies from Grief University set the DUST community on fire with their sabotage of a DUST Uni Planetary Conquest match. They boldly proclaimed their actions on the DUST forums, triggering a lively response from players that ranged from praise to recommendations to commit suicide. They followed up with another attack on R.I.f.t. later that evening, prompting the victims to create their own thread of discussion with the title "[HUMBLED] Infiltrated by spies in PC". More threads popped up, speculating as to the identity of Grief University's members and complaining that corporations could no longer accept new members without care or regard to their backgrounds. But what's most startling is a newly-made and now-locked thread entitled "Calling for the Removal of Jenza Aranda and Iron Wolf Saber from CPM0".'

Game piracy overestimated, claims new research

Added: 16.05.2013 18:04 | 3 views | 0 comments

New large-scale research says that piracy is "extraordinarily prevalent" in the games industry, but accuses "potentially biased" trade organisations of potentially overestimating the problem.

A large-scale, open-method academic investigation into the prevalence of video game piracy has said that the number of illegal downloads is not as high as reported by industry bodies.

was conducted by Anders Drachen from the Department of Communication and Psychology at Aalborg University, Kevin Bauer Cheriton from the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo, and Robert W. D. Veitch from Copenhagen Business School's Department of Informatics. A total of 173 games on BitTorrent were analysed over three months from 2010 to 2011.

The games were illegally downloaded by 12.6 million people over the 90-day investigation.

The most popular genre was RPG, with 18.9 percent of the illegal downloads. Other popular genres included action-adventure (15.9 percent), third-person shooters (12.7 percent), and racing (9.3 percent).

The study also pointed at a correlation between the highest-rated games on Metacritic contributing to more piracy.

The new investigation says it clashes with the statements made by trade bodies such as the Entertainment Software Association. The new research paper also claims that previous studies into piracy are "potentially biased, partially due to the interest of the industry to reduce piracy and thus potentially overestimate the problem."

"There is very little objective information available about [piracy's] magnitude or its distribution across game titles and game genres," says the research.

"First and foremost, P2P game piracy is extraordinarily prevalent and geographically distributed," concluded Drachen in a press release () accompanying the research. "However, the numbers in our investigation suggest that previously reported magnitudes in game piracy are too high. It also appears that some common myths are wrong, eg that it is only shooters that get pirated, as we see a lot of activity for children's and family games on BitTorrent for the period we investigated."

The 10 most popular pirated games across the research's 90-day period were, from most to least pirated: Fallout: New Vegas, Darksiders, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, NBA 2K11, Tron Evolution, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Starcraft 2, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Two Worlds II, and The Sims 3: Late Night.

Warren Spector, Paul Sams leading new game program at University of Texas

Deus Ex designer and Blizzard executive spearheading intensive 12-month course that will only accept 20 students.

Deus Ex designer Warren Spector and Blizzard president Paul Sams will head up a new postgraduate game development course at the University of Texas in Austin, the school announced today (via ).

The new Denius-Sams Gaming Academy post-baccalaureate certification program will begin during the fall 2014 semester and is designed for "top candidates looking for leadership training the field of video game production."

The University of Texas college of communication, college of fine arts, and department of computer science are working together to launch the program. According to Spector, the course will be "a little different" than the typical game-focused program.

He described the course, which will only accept 20 students, as a "much shorter, 12-month very intense program. It's kind of like the Navy S.E.A.L.s. It's going to be very competitive."

What will differentiate the program from other, similar courses is that it will "focus explicitly on that bigger, creative leadership. Both the management; the production side. And the game direction/creative leadership side. That's a space that isn't being served by a lot of the other development programs."

For more on the course, check out the video below.

Spector found himself out of a job when .

He made headlines recently by for saying the world did not need a new "generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game."
