XCOM: Enemy Within Review | GameCloud

Daniel at GameCloud writes: "XCOM Enemy Unknown was successful at rebooting the series and modernizing the classic strategy because the changes were enough to welcome new players, but not enough to scare off veterans. However, Enemy Within seemed to have missed the memo and feels rushed; maybe in response to the backlash from the Slingshot DLC? While some of the bugs can be overlooked and worked around, some of them are inexcusable. Ideas such as the new aliens and EXALT are interesting, but are simply not fleshed out enough to make a significant impact. Additionally, the new unit types are fun but grossly overpowered, and this doesnt work either. Its clear that Enemy Within understands the concept of what makes a great XCOM game, but drops the ball in the areas that count. With an assortment of bugs, glitches, and unbalanced additions, its difficult to recommend whole-heartily."

"After XCOM: Enemy Unknown re-invigorated the XCOM franchise, many people considered The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, a fairly generic looking third-person shooter, to be as unnecessary as all the words hanging off of its title. Despite this, 2K released the game anyway so lets gather round and take an unbiased look at The Bureau: XCOM Declassified."

Expansions, real expansions, are a rare thing in this age. An age where were sold tiny extra maps as DLC, or a handful of extra models that should have been included in the original package. Greedy publishers constantly scrabbling at our pockets, draining us of our pennies between full releases. Expansions should change the way the original game is meant to be played, provide a new angle, and most importantly provide content that adds real worth to the experience. XCOM: Enemy Within is a real expansion, twisting and turning the recent reinvention of XCOM: Enemy Unknown into a more structured and refined beast.

Running a clandestine agency devoted to fighting diabolical alien invaders is tough, but as XCOM: Enemy Unknown taught us, it gets a lot easier if you can steal things out of the enemy's playbook. And when those things include extreme genetic modifications and hulking robot exoskeletons two of the biggest features introduced by the Enemy Within expansion the fight doesn't necessarily get easier, but it does get a lot teresting.
