As imposing as a runthrough of XCOM: Enemy Unknown was (balancing battlefield duties with managing internal resources and acquiescing international allies), a second tour of duty is tougher, as repetition can turn out to be a bigger enemy than the actual aliens.

By avoiderdragon:When XCOM: Enemy Unknown first came out, it became a big hit from out of the blue as no one expected it to play so well and be so affective to the players emotions. It wasnt just a good turn-based tactics game that did everything just right, but it also made you feel for the soldiers, especially if you decided to customize them then leveled them up from mission to mission. If you lose one, you can feel it in your soul since that soldier is gone forever, which is similar to other games like the Fire Emblem series. It has since been released on consoles and even mobile platforms, and it seems like Firaxis is not done just yet.

Drew Leachman writes: One of my favorite games of 2012, XCOM: Enemy Unknown got me back into strategy games. The make or break difficulty gave the sense of accomplishment, and the way management was handled both in and outside of combat was rewarding and complex. I absolutely loved the experience. Finally, Firaxis has released their expansion to the game titled Enemy Within, which changes up the well known dynamic of the game while adding a ton of customization options.

Chris West reviews XCOM: Enemy Within on the PC: "After a half-hearted attempt at being a tactical shooter, it is time for the XCOM series to go back to what it knows best, hardcore, turn-based strategy. Last year, XCOM: Enemy Unknown was easily one of the best titles of 2012 and now the series is back with the expansion pack, Enemy Within. While it isnt exactly a sequel, it still manages to enhance the already stellar gameplay and add more hours of play time to an already lengthy game."
