It's becoming a bit of a trend to take a well-established, serious game and make a zany standalone expansion for it. Red Dead Redemption added zombies, Far Cry 3 made an '80s action movie; but how do you make Saints Row sillier than it already is? SP: Saints Row titles have delivered some pretty impressive open-world action-adventure experiences over the years, as developer Volition managed to flesh out the series that originally started life as a poor man's Grand Theft Auto clone. With recent entries, such as Saints Row 3 or 4, the franchise reached new heights in terms of quality, while embracing its outlandish nature, instead of trying to go the serious or realistic path.

Gat out of Hell is billed as an open world action-packed adventure game that places series favorites Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington smack dab in the middle of Hell. When Saints Row started off it was nothing more than a Grand Theft Auto wannabe. But, with much love and the help of what we can only assume is plenty of booze and drugs, the beautiful people over at Volition and High Voltage Software have taken this game series to new heights. How have they done this? Well with plenty of warped minds (more warped than mine) that manage to come up with numerous inconceivable enemies, plots, vehicles and weapons to keep us gamers entertained for hours on end. And thanks to those same guys, the fun many of us had on previous gen consoles can now be enjoyed on the PS4 and Xbox One.

This is a standalone expansion that perfectly demonstrates the danger and consequence of coasting on a series name and reputation, especially as it sees release in a time where the industry has made so many strides forward with open-world adventures. Developer Volition has delivered a dreary-looking, repetitive and entirely familiar experience that does little to hold attention, let alone impress in any one particular area. Dick jokes, four-year- old reused assets, systems and mechanics thrown inside a bland game world just dont cut it in a post-GTA V world."
