The franchise started as a more lighthearted GTA clone, found its wacky identity with the sequel, went further with dildo bats and celebrity cameos in 2011s Saints Row: The Third, and threw superpowers in the mix two years later with the fourth entry. Fans started the series by drinking 40s to gain health, but by the end of IV they were controlling the President of the United States as he befriended Rowdy Roddy Piper and sprinted up the sides of skyscrapers. Going forward, Volition would have to amp up the craziness even more and freshen up the setting if they wanted to keep the franchise from going stale. They've done just that with Gat out of Hell, but it still fails to reinvigorate the series thanks to nearly identical gameplay."

Its a $20 game that follows the story of a pair of Saints Row gang members traveling to the literal hell to save their boss (who is also the President of the United States and the character you played as in the previous Saints Row games). While that sets up a different world and story than its most recent predecessor, Gat Out of Hell shares a core with Saints Row IV. So the question I came into this game with was simple: Did developer Volition make enough game for Gat Out of Hell to stand on its own?"

Saints Row has become known as an over the top series now, a view that has been fully embraced by Volition as the studio continues to expand on the series. So far in the Saints Row canon youve had alien invasions, wrestler crime lords, virtual reality simulations, and of course Mayor Burt Reynolds. Now a new frontier opens itself up for a saintly invasion, one where such a term would be a grave insult; Hell. This new story has Satan kidnap the boss of the Saints, leading Gat Kinzie to head to Hell to bring him back. This expansion is set after the events of Saints Row IV, and so does contain some minor spoilers if you havent finished the main campaign.

Volition continues to strike out with the Saints Row franchise, taking it about as far away from a GTA clone as they can without actually removing the shooting and driving altogether. Now theyve got a new expansion to the series, that puts a cap on the events of Saints Row IV and lets players take on the role of Johnny Gat, possibly the most interesting Asian character in the gaming world right now, and Kinzie Kensington as they try to get The Boss out of a Wedding In Hell. Literally.
