Sexism in Video Games

Added: 17.04.2014 11:14 | 2 views | 0 comments

While the topic is not new, last year a major discussion began about sexism and women in video games. Anita Sarkeesian's series "Tropes versus Women in Video Games" received both praise and derision in the gaming community, and brought the issue to the mainstream. Aside from the controversy regarding the finances of her project, Sarkeesian raised some good points about women in video games. She's right that female protagonists are underrepresented in video games. She's wrong about "the damsel in distress" trope devaluing female characters, and her "Ms. Male" trope is nothing more than a case of confirmation bias.

Woman Crush Wednesday: Jade Raymond

"When we look back at last gen in the coming years, we will have many franchises to thank for the increasing push for exploration both in a physical sense and a storytelling sense. Of them, only one looks, feels, and sounds like Assassins Creed. This sort of unmistakable character is a difficult note to hit in a world where our industry is growing into one of the most competitive on the planet, but no one will ever look at a picture of a man clad in white and armed to the teeth without thinking of the franchise. But we cant appreciate ACs branding and presence without also appreciating one of the series biggest captains, Jade Raymond."

When Jessica Vazquez and I sat down to work on an article to celebrate women in gaming for Women's History Month, we began by thinking about what female characters have been influential in gaming, and we came up with the usual suspects: Samus Aran, Terra Branford, Zelda, Poison, Carmen Sandiego, and so forth.

Perfect Woman - Preview

Added: 24.03.2014 0:41 | 5 views | 0 comments

It makes me feel like a natural woman.

Gender critics tend to argue that there aren't enough female characters in games, and that the majority of female characters are merely sidekicks. So enters Perfect Woman, an indie-developed camera-based game by Peter Lu and Lea Schouml;nfelder, that has nary a man in sight. On the outset, the focus on female characters might seem like a terrible, exploitative gimmick, but having been nominated for IGF's Nuovo Award for innovation, it sends a bold and interesting statement about femininity and objectification.
