Sony Pictures Animation has just closed a deal worth $1 million that gives the studio the rights to a movie pitch about emojis, according to a report from .
You read that right. The faces that appear all over social media and text messages are going to be the subjects of a new animated film coming out of Sony's cinema division. And, the report states that several other studios wanted the film as well.
There's apparently going to be a movie about these.
Two other studios (rumored to be Warner Bros. and Paramount) entered into an auction with Sony, but Sony eventually won with a bid worth over $1 million. The film will be directed by Anthony Leondis, who also directed Lilo and Stitch 2, and it'll be written by Eric Siegel, the producer of the TBS show Men at Work.
This could be just the beginning of films about emojis: the Deadline report also mentioned that there's another pitch being formulated right now.
