Motocross Meltdown Review (iPhone, iPad, Android)

Added: 29.01.2014 13:00 | 9 views | 0 comments

Gamezebo Rating: 60

I'm not generally opposed to the idea of one-button games. In fact, when done well they can be pretty awesome. On the other hand, they can also be a pretty shallow letdown. Motocross Meltdown falls somewhere in between those two extremes. It's pretty, and it's full of customization options that encourage replay, but it's also very one-note. So much so that it's rather difficult to remain interested for very long.

The basic idea of Motocross Meltdown is to keep winning races and other motocross-style events in order to earn enough money to upgrade your bike (or buy a better one). Then win tougher races and events to win more money to upgrade or purchase better bikes in order to win even tougher races, etc. Each event is one-on-one against either an AI rider or another player depending on the mode chosen, with the spoils going to the faster or higher-scoring participant.

Amazon will Conquer the Games Market (iPad)

Added: 29.01.2014 9:00 | 8 views | 0 comments

It faced down long-established booksellers in 1994, expanded that fight to big box retailers a few years later - and, in 2011, it took on Apple and Google with the launch of the Kindle Fire tablet. Now it has its eye on the mobile gaming market - and to win this fight, it will need to take its gloves off.

The Kindle Fire is already a decent gaming device. 70% of all users play games on it - with ARPU's that are higher than Google Play and neck-to-neck with Apple. But there's room to grow. And while Amazon might be behind to the gaming world, Microsoft was also a latecomer in the console space - and it went on to be a leader.

Suits and Swords Review (iPhone, iPad, Android)

Added: 28.01.2014 15:00 | 11 views | 0 comments

Gamezebo Rating: 60

As someone who makes most of his income working in the casino industry, but also enjoys playing and writing about RPGs, I sometimes feel games like Suits and Swords are messing with my head. Splicing together blackjack and a fantasy RPG could be really intriguing. Or it could be a disaster, as splicing in general . This game manages to be neither, ending up a middle-of-the-road experience in both content and execution.

Unlike some other casino-RPG hybrids, having the inhabitants of the Suits and Swords world play blackjack to fight their battles makes some sense. That's because the whole place is themed like a deck of playing cards, with four distinctly different lands - Heart Union, Diamond Empire, Club Kingdom and Spade Nation - in which to adventure.

In Fear I Trust Review (iPhone, iPad)

Added: 28.01.2014 10:00 | 11 views | 0 comments

Gamezebo Rating: 30

I've seen some reviewers refer to In Fear I Trust as a survival horror game. I've also seen the App Store's description describe it as "polished, compelling, and instantly unsettling."

It is none of these things.

The game does nothing to dispel the rumors of its horrific nature, but I can assure you that this is a visual novel at heart. Personally, I like visual novels quite a lot (Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward has one of my favorite video game stories of all time and proved that the genre has a place on iOS).

Hello Kitty joins Puzzle Dragons (iPad)

Added: 27.01.2014 19:00 | 6 views | 0 comments

Whoever said that a kitten and a dragon couldn't be best friends? Well I guess if you really think about it, one is a cuddly and fragile ball of fluff, while the other is a fire-breathing death machine with talons and scales, so maybe I can understand all you naysayers out there. But either way, that hasn't stopped GungHo Online Entertainment from announcing their latest collaboration today: this time with the adorable Hello Kitty World!

Starting now and running until February 9th, Puzzle & Dragons players will be able to download an exclusive Technical Dungeon that features a colorful amusement park theme, four difficulty levels, and a slew of awesome "mash-up" characters taken from the two games, like Kitty Flamie and Kitty Bubblie, which can be earned by using a new Rare Egg Machine.

The History Channel brings The Great Martian War to mobile gamers, doesn't know what 'history' means (iPad)

Added: 27.01.2014 16:25 | 4 views | 0 comments

Does anyone else feel like The History Channel confuses the word "history" with "fan fiction" an awful lot nowadays? But while that's aggravating as crap for an amateur historian such as myself, it's also downright riveting for a video game nerd who loves the idea of trench warfare against aliens. With that in mind, allow me to introduce you to a new concept: .

Set in an alternate World War I period (and based on a made-for-TV movie of the same name that aired last fall, because WHY WOULDN'T THE HISTORY CHANNEL MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT MARTIANS), The Great Martian War is an endless runner destined for the App Store and Google Play on February 5.

If you're getting a little tired of endless runners, we get it - but don't judge until you've seen the trailer above. There's just something about World War I soldiering pitted against an HG Wells-style terror that's just has video games written all over it.

Watch the skies for our full review next month.

Tales of Phantasia Review (iPhone, iPad)

Added: 27.01.2014 15:00 | 12 views | 0 comments

Gamezebo Rating: 40

Free-to-play mobile titles tend to make traditional game fans furious, and when you come across a hair-pulling experience like Namco Bandai's Tales of Phantasia, it admittedly becomes hard to defend the controversial formula.

Tales of Phantasia is a 16-bit classic action / RPG that was a huge hit in Japan, but has had a limited Western release since its debut on the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo). The original game received a fan translation that takes some creative liberties with the story and its characters (think unwarranted profanity - lots of it), and a poor Game Boy Advance remake, but otherwise, English-speakingfans will have to make do with Tales of Phantasia for mobile. What a shame, then, that Namco considers this poorly-constructed adaptation a worthy ambassador for newcomers to the series.

Tales of Phantasia is free to download, which should rightfully set off some warning bells. How does the free-to-play formula even work in this instance?

Front Wars Review (iPhone, iPad)

Added: 24.01.2014 16:00 | 11 views | 0 comments

Gamezebo Rating: 70

War. War never changes. Well, except for humanity's new tendency to play our little battle games on a digital plane instead of with real guns and soldiers. That's a change, and a pretty relieving one at that.

Front Wars by Gregory Challant is one such example of a war simulation. It actually looks and plays almost identically to Famicom Wars / Advance Wars, a Nintendo series that hasn't seen an update in quite some time (the studio behind the series, Intelligent Systems, has been hard at work on alternative war / strategy games like the excellent Fire Emblem: Awakening for the Nintendo 3DS).

While Front Wars is nowhere near as polished as even the earliest Advance Wars titles, there's still quite a bit to like here - provided you're not bothered by Challant's, er, "flattery" of Intelligent Systems' work.

There is one major difference between Front Wars and Advance Wars, however: Whereas the latter is based off fantasy scenarios and made-up wars, Front Wars lets you play through prominent battles that defined the Second World War. You literally send cute, large-headed soldiers to their deaths on the shores of Normandy. It's bizarre.

Free Games and Sales: Where's My Mickey?, Dungeons of Dredmor and more! (iPad)

Added: 24.01.2014 15:00 | 5 views | 0 comments

We have a bit of a mixed bag of free games and sales this week, but what would life be without the ups and the downs? The biggest area where you should direct your bargain-hunting sensors is over at the Nordic Games catalogue, which is currently on sale across GOG.com and even on the Steam store for a few select titles.

If you're still hungry for some price cuts after that, you can always make your way over to the Humble Bundle camp and pick up an excellent bundle for fans of roguelike games, as well as mosey on over to the iOS App Store for a short but sweet collection of fun games at next-to-nothing prices.

CandySwipe: Already fighting the CANDY CRUSH SAGA trademark, prepared to fight CANDY too (iPad)

Added: 24.01.2014 13:26 | 9 views | 0 comments

Albert Ransom, the founder of Runsome Apps, first released CandySwipe to Android gamers on November 15, 2010 - a full four months before King debuted Candy Crush on King.com (). Both games offer match-3 gameplay and both are built around a candy theme, but in our conversation with Ransom, he wasn't crying "clone." He's just worried about the same thing King is: consumer confusion.

"If you start typing 'is candy swip' into google, you will get the auto complete 'is candy swipe the same as candy crush'." It's a frustrating experience for a developer whose work came first and who, like King, was quick to trademark. The CANDYSWIPE trademark was granted to Ransom in July 2011.

But being first and having a mark isn't going to do much to sway public perception - especially when a similar competitor shoots to the top of the App Store.
