The end of the year is always a time of reflection for us here at Gamezebo, as we think back on all of the wonderful new gaming experiences that made the last 12 months such a blast to game through. But let's be honest: all of these amazing video games wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the many technologies that are made to run them on! And as our beloved community moves even deeper into the digital age, those new gaming technologies only get more advanced and futuristic (and by default, sanely awesome). So we decided that it would only be fitting to take a look back at some of the greatest new technologies of gaming that were introduced on the market in 2013. From a full-fledged 3D virtual reality gaming helmet, to a Minority Report-like device that lets you game with in-air gestures, to the first home-based console that would bring Android-powered gaming to your TV screen, it's clear that we've come quite a long way from the simple days of Pong. So without further ado, here are the 5 pieces of new tech that we thought were particularly great in 2013. |
Ratchet and Clank is a popular action game property that's exclusive to Sony and the PlayStation, so it's only natural to do a double-take at Ratchet and Clank: Before the Nexus for mobile. Before the Nexus isn't actually a full-fledged Ratchet and Clanktitle, however, nor does it contain the depth of any of the series' mainstream entries. In fact, Before the Nexus is a 3D endless running game that plays much like any other runner slumming around on the App Store or Google Play. It looks great and it should keep you busy for an hour or two, but the game obviously exists just to whet your appetite for the latest Ratchet and Clank title, for the PlayStation 3. |
We kicked off our best of the year coverage a little early with our special yesterday, but if you're looking for the real meat and potatoes of this countdown, it begins here. We reviewed nearly a thousand games in 2013. That's a staggering number no matter how you slice it. But of the thousand or so games we looked at, only twenty could rise to the top and be called best of the year. (well... 20+13, but you already knew that, right?) But enough jibber jabber. Let's kick things off right. Here are our picks for #20-#15. |
The final paragraphs of the gamebook Island of the Lizard King contain a scene I can still remember clearly today, nearly thirty years after I first read it. It stamped itself on my ten-year old brain because it seemed so hideous at the time. I'm made of sterner stuff today, and was positively anticipating re-living those climatic moments on my iPad. As a digital gamebook, you'll spend most of the time reading paragraphs of text and then being presented with a series of possible choices at the end. In this way, you work your own chosen path through a work of fiction. Occasionally you'll be called on to fight creatures or test one of your three statistics, all mediated by dice rolls with a slick and satisfying system. |
We're really in the homestretch of 2013 now, and it's been quite a good year for those of us in the gaming world. Don't believe me? Then you should probably check out our ongoing lists of what we thought were the very best games to come out over the last 12 months. But just because we're knee-deep in all of this gaming reflection, that doesn't mean we're not also looking ahead to see what awesome new games that 2014 is going to bring! If 2014 winds up being even half as great as 2013 was for gaming, then I think it's safe to say that we're going to be in for some truly unforgettable experiences in the very near future: but something tells me that 2014 is going to be even better. After all, when you've got new games from both the makers of coming up on the horizon, how can it not be anything short of glorious? So in that case, here are a few of the biggest games that we absolutely cannot wait to play in 2014. |
Waking on the shore of a strange island, your first realization is that your friends are missing. Your second realization is that it's time to get to work! Much like , Cat Story puts you in control of creating a functional town one building at a time. Harvest food, gather resources, and build bungalows as you find your friends and expand the village to take over the island! |
If 2013 proved anything to us, it's this: video games get better every year. For our year-end retrospective, we decided that we'd try something different this year: we'd pick the top 20 games from everything we covered this year to select the very best. But the list was too good to contain it to just twenty games. So with the year 2013 coming to a close, we thought it fitting to select the best 20+13 games. We're still going to count down the top twenty - but before we do, we wanted to mention thirteen tremendously good games that were deserving of your attention this year. They didn't quite make the top 20, but if there's a single game in our +13 you've missed, now's the time to fix that. |

Earlier in the week, Apple announced that both Vlambeer's , giving it four out of five stars. While we enjoyed the beautiful art style and clever puzzle designs, the multiplayer left much to be desired and success in the game sometimes came more from luck, than skill. |
Shadow puppets have always been cool, right? Even if I've never been able to master some of the more challenging forms myself, like a flock of birds or a galloping deer, I still like to consider myself a big appreciator of the candlelight art form. Well now Triada Studio Games will be bringing the advent of shadow puppets to life in an atmospheric new puzzler called . In the game, players are tasked with rotating various spotlight-illuminated objects in front of a wall in order to make their respective shadows line up in a specific pattern. If you go ahead and watch the debut gameplay video of Shadowmatic in action, you'll come to the finely-calculated conclusion that the game looks seriously cool. Not only are the 3D graphics incredibly photorealistic, but the movements feel smooth, and the lighting effects themselves are especially masterful. All in all, Shadowmatic will be packing in over 70 unique and shadowy puzzles spread across 9 different environments, and there's even a non-linear level progression for players to advance through. The game is currently nearing the end of its development cycle, and has a tentative release date of March 2014 on iOS platforms. In the meantime, I guess it's back to contorting my hands in front of an open fire and hoping something neat appears on my wall. |
Nyamyam has released a brand new trailer for their whimsical pop-up book adventure game today, and as that big old title at the top of this page would suggest, it's absolutely gorgeous. It's so gorgeous, in fact, that I'm not even going to sit here and tell you what goes on in the trailer. Nope, I'm making you click that button just below and watch it for yourself! (Don't worry - you're totally going to thank me later). Hmm, now I don't know what to write about in the meantime while you're busy feasting your eyes on all of the beautiful colors and quiet imagery of Tengami coming to life. Well, this is kind of awkward. I should probably get some dinner soon. I'm thinking takeout tonight; don't want to set off the smoke alarm while trying to cook a cheeseburger again like last night. Oh, oops - you're all finished watching now? What did I tell you? Gorgeous to the nth degree. So before you go hit that replay button and get lost in the magical world of Tengami all over again, just let me remind you that the game is currently slated for an iOS release sometime in early 2014, with a PC and Mac version planned for later down the road. |
By many people's reckoning, Disney's Frozen might be one of the best animated films they've done in a while; even so, there's nothing that says the movie's ancillary products are up to snuff. Disney's team knows how to market with things like dolls, toys, and clothing, and these days they're reinforcing their cinematic brands with mobile games. Sadly, interactive entertainment is not their forte, as evidenced by the mediocre free-to-play match-three game Frozen Free Fall. It's no surprise that Free Fall tells more or less the same story as the film and banks on the film's appeal. Starting with sisters Elsa and Anna, it sets you to removing the snow and frost slowly taking over the kingdom of Arendelle. There's nothing earth (or ice)-shattering here; like a thousand other match-three games, you're asked to achieve a set score or clear the board by matching three or more same-colored crystals. Also like other games in the genre, power-ups like Icebergs are created when you match four or five crystals; other power-ups cause entire vertical or horizontal rows, or rectangular groups of nine crystals, to explode. |
