To be a pirate is to value freedom above all else. If you plunder enough gold, instill enough fear, and get out before the world tears you down, you can be the most free man or woman in the world. At least that's Assassin's Creed's take on those maligned malingerers of yesteryear. Don't expect anything more historical than that in Assassin's Creed: Pirates, the latest mobile take on Ubisoft's blockbuster franchise. If you decide to take the plunge on this pay-for-it-once affair, you'll find yourself free to rebel against monarchy, liberate slaves, and blow away galleons - all without having to leave the comfort of your own ship's wheel. One of the most popular features of the last two console Assassin's Creed games has been naval combat. Like any good privateers, the developers of Pirates seized on that goodwill and ran with it, creating an entire game around the concept. |
The closer we creep to the holiday season, the bigger the releases seem to be getting. For example: today the sequel to |
Mobile rewards platform Kiip has announced . Kiip first began in 2010, working with mid-tier and indie developers to put special rewards into games that players could receive and enjoy just by playing. I recently had a chance to chat with Kiip Co-Founder Brian Wong, and to find out some more about how the Kiip rewards platform actually works, and what it was like to partner up with ZeptoLab in this exciting new manner. The entire basis of Kiip rewards is founded on one simple principle: to own and reward every single "achievement moment" that a user can experience. Kiip strives to capture that special moment of player happiness at the time of reaching a certain milestone in a game, such as leveling-up or completing a stage, and then acknowledges that uplifting emotion by offering rewards. But the best part about it is that players don't have to do anything extra to earn these rewards: they are simply gathered through regular gameplay, and as Wong tells me, "When you get a reward, you feel like you earned it." |
For some, it's not about the journey, but the destination. To wit, for some gamers, they could care less about venturing through one of many stages: they just want to get to the boss and throw down. Endless Boss Fight lives up to its name by pitting the player, who takes on the guise of a small robot with boxing gloves, against a large and ever-evolving Boss Robot. Duck in, out, and around Boss's volley of various missile types to deliver a series of powerful body blows, then back out to gather coins and power-ups. Or, with the right timing, you can even punch Boss's warheads to reveal more coins, or to send his own ordnance right back at him. |
If you're a junkie, you already know that King is super-committed to bringing you fresh content regularly. New stages are released every few weeks, giving those of you who've mastered the game a constant supply of challenges. Even so, you've never quite seen an update like this before. In all honesty, this thing is so much of a game changer that it warrants the term "expansion." Available to players who've completed level 50 or higher, Dreamworld is a whole new Saga map that takes players on a journey with Odus the Owl - a new character that introduces a equally new game mechanic. You'll need to keep Odus balanced on his half-moon perch by crushing the right candies. Get it wrong, and it sounds as though Odus will take a tumble. It's an interesting solution to a conundrum that King has been wrestling with: how to create new content that isn't just for end-game players. With 30 levels at launch, it shouldn't be long before we find out if King is as quick to create content for Dreamworld as they are for the main game. In the meantime, please excuse me; I have a new owl friend to attend to. |
As of today, My Penguin, the mobile companion app to the popular children's virtual world Club Penguin, is no more - but only because it's becoming Club Penguin for iPad. When it launched , My Penguin was designed to give players a way to connect with the web-based MMO while also giving Disney Interactive a chance to learn about how people would interact with the game on mobile devices. Kids could dress their avatars, redesign their igloos and try out a selection of mini-games, but it wasn't the full Club Penguin experience. With its latest update and name change, the mobile version of Club Penguin is ready to take a big leap forward. For the first time, young gamers can play the same way they do online, teleporting to rooms, visiting their igloos, and everything else they've been accustomed to doing on the web. |
Some games sound great, but then never happen. For a long time, that seemed like it would be a fitting epitaph for The Shadow Sun. Announced to get up to speed, or just check out the new trailer below. The short version, though, is that The Shadow Sun is a massive RPG from the team that brought you two of the most popular expansions in the Neverwinter Nights series. If that doesn't get your bag of dice tumbling in excitement, I don't know what will. |

And speaking of new big releases, tonight also brings with it another of 2013's most highly anticipated mobile games by the entire community at large. Now I would tell you what that game is right here in this introductory section, but then what fun would it be to keep scrolling down and see all of the new mobile goodies in store for you later on tonight? I guess we all stayed off the mobile gamer naughty list this year! |
DeNA has announced a new partnership today with Crytek, the revered game developer who brought us such gritty console experiences as Far Cry and Crysis, for a brand new third-person mobile shooter called , which will net them an exclusive character with limited-edition gear. And when you're done doing that, why not mosey on over to the comments and let us know what you think about Crytek's explosive new entrance into the world of mobile games! |
Angry Birds helped us fall in love with the physics of speed all over again. kart racer was inevitable. But while thematically a fit, Angry Birds Go! is a pretty big break from what Rovio has brought us in the past. It's their first game with 3D modelling. It's their first game in an established genre that the console crowd would get eager about. It is, as much as can be for one of the biggest names in mobile gaming, something of a gamble. And while I've been having a lot of fun with it, I don't think it quite hits the high mark that Rovio might have hoped.
At the start of every race, players will pull back on their slingshot (a nice nod to the original game) and shoot their racer onto the track. From there the game becomes an exercise in overly-simplified design. Player don't need to worry about braking or accelerating. Drifting isn't (much of) a thing. There are no item boxes to break, and in many of the game's challenges, not even other racers to compete against. In all honesty, the game could have been called Angry Birds: Steering isn't too much for you, is it? If so, we're really sorry and will take it out in a future update. |
If there's one thing I've learned after countless hours of hunting for hidden objects in the shadowy recesses of the world, it's that HOGs and history just seem to go hand in hand. To that end, Absolutist is hard at work on a brand new social hidden object game for mobile devices, and this time around, the free-to-play adventure is so ambitious that even all of space and time won't be able to contain it. Featuring a cool science-fiction theme, tons of real-life historical figures to help you along the way, and lots of variety in terms of the gameplay, playing Time Gap: The Mysteries of the Lost Civilization will quickly start to put huge gaps in your own free time as well! The story of Time Gap begins when your player-character suddenly realizes that everyone else in the world has vanished without a trace while you were spending some time down at the café. Your character is then promptly confronted by the ghosts of several of history's greatest figures, such as Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, and even Cleopatra, who all try to help you investigate where exactly everybody in the world has disappeared to. The narrative and dialogue are both lighthearted and fun, and the story sets the stage for some great hidden object searching throughout all sorts of environments across the world, as well as time and space. |
