Digimon has always strived to be as relevant in popular culture as other anime/game series, but the franchise has ultimately played second fiddle to Pokemon since the very beginning. That being said, Pokemons success can be attributed to its basic, simplistic but inherently addictive formula, one which has needed very little modification or change since its conception over 15 years ago. Upon seeing Pokemons mainstream popularity, acclaim and success with Pokemon Red and Blue, Nintendo made sure to replicate that same model again and again, to this very day the franchise remains one of the companys best sellers. The problem is, while Digimon succeeded in rivalling Pokemons success as an animated series, the video game counterparts have always been lacking, subpar or severely underpublicized.
